"Worst Video Product Since Cartrivision"0.5 starson by ekb
Pros: Absolutely None
Cons: Junk product, backed by arrogant denial
Summary: Records only what it wants, when it wants for as long as it wants. You'll especially enjoy answering the "save or delete" question for dozens of programs -- including expensive sports subscription shows -- you've never gotten to see and never will get to see because actually viewing the show is not one of the options.
For the technically inclined, this is called the "unwatchable bug" and the DirecTV tech support people are programmed to claim it is a fixable firmware problem. (While DTV's flacks are simulataneously claiming the problem doesn't exist -- see elsewhere on this site.)
Reality is that numerous firmware upgrades over five months have not improved the HR-20 one bit and the problem seems to be junk logic boards and or hard drives. DTV, of course, refuses to issue refunds on either the hardware or missed programing.
The only "upside" of this piece of garbage is that owning one will make you part of the inevitable class-action lawsuit and you will get to help to make some lawyers a few extra million while benefitting yourself not at all.
Question to DTV: Most people are never going to bother to demand their money back, they'll believe your spin that it's all their fault. Wouldn't it be cheaper to give the rest of us our $300 back than to defend the lawsuit and pay the judgment?
