"Great features - terrible reliability" on by Jimsync2001
Pros: ease of use, seamless integration with Dish programming
Cons: Runs hot, freaks out, you lose all your recordings when it craps out
Summary: I have gone through at least 4 510's over the past few years. They randomly freak out and my most recent one (3 days old) lost the disk drive. They don't credit you for loss of service, and charge you extra programming fees while you wait for a replacement box. I'm been a Dish customer for 7 years and they don't care that I'm ready to drop them. I asked to have it replaced with an alternate model, and they are ready to charge me more and force a new 2 year commitment.

"Do not be fooled. Get a TIVO. Even Comcast is better" on by isnipdog1975
Pros: Inexpensive. Large Capacity.
Cons: Horrific Remote. "Clunky" user interface.
Summary: I have used them all: Comcast, TIVO, Dish Network DVR, even Microsoft's temporary foray into DVR's 2 years ago. TIVO is far superior. 3 years no problems. I only changed because I moved into temporary housing and decided to try the others. I read the reviews here after I had already called Dish Network to cancel (beware of their 3 day cancellation policy)
This product would say it recorded shows and then they would not show up. Sometimes I could not rewind, only fast-forward. The most irritating ommision is how it changes to record another channel without asking you to change.... BAM it's just goes. TIVO would at least ask. Sometimes I don't want to record a scheduled show! Let me decide.
I really wanted this one to work for me for the price, but I sent it back after only 3 days of heavy usage. It missed 4 shows, but said it was taping them, and showed them in the history. Pure unadultarated junk. The most defining differentiating factor of all the DVR's is the remote. TIVO's remote wins by 100k miles. What are Comcast and Dish Network thinking with such crowded remotes. USABILITY. USABILITY, USABILITY! It's the same reason IPOD's beat the rest of em ... And let's not talk about the support. They gave me some half-baked story about daylight savings time causing the taping problems. If your DVR cannot handle daylight savings time like a $5 Walmart watch, this simply underscores why I sent it back ..... -
"Get A Tivo and Save Your Headache." on
Pros: Looks good sitting on the shelf, and easy to pack up to send back to Dishnetwork.
Cons: Let me start by saying I had a Series 1 Tivo for 3 years and never had a single problem. Signed up for Dish 12 months ago and I am now on my 6th 510 Receiver, and that is because I was tired of sending it back so much. PROBLEMS On Every One I Had - Very

"It will do in a pinch" on by Baron83
Pros: It works okay
Cons: It works poorly compared to TiVo
Summary: Half the year I use TiVo and half I have to use Dish. The software makes all the difference. TiVo is easy and intuitive and easy to customize. Dish is difficult and clunky by comparison because TiVo has locked up their software and doesn't license it. If you have a choice, get a standard Dish box and use TiVo; you won't regret it.
