Pros Stream over Roku
Use/select your own hardware size (instead of including one and tripling the price)
Excellent speed when using DVR function
Super cool guide funtionality
Cons Softened picture quality
Summary The economics of the whole thing is what makes it so appealing. I mean we used to pay $8 monthly for Netflix to get movies and $120 monthly for Directv for all the other stuff for 3 TVs, total $128 a month. We cut the cord, got rid of Directv entirely, added a subscription to Hulu ($8 monthly) and Amazon Prime($70 a year). So now our monthly bill is ~ $22- for all.
This is simply awesome, use for free over the air (OTA) HDTV to stream through ROKU or PC. We have an existing Roku 2 and just bought the Simple.TV box and a ROKU 3. We moved our HDTV antenna from our TV to where the router is now we are streaming the local channels (20) to the 2 ROKU boxes. We're going to buy a third Roku soon! And we can stream to our PCs if we want to. You'd have to buy 3 TiVos to do this (1 for each TV) and that'd cost you over $2000 with service vs 1 Simple.TV and 3 Rokus ~ $500.
DVR functionality is wonderful. We just set this up yesterday, put in our shows on the guide. First show recorded was Arrow on the CW, recorded tonight, we watched it, it looked great. Not as crisp as the HDTV antenna hooked directly up to the TV BUT still HD and the DVR functionality was priceless. The DVR also functions very fast, we could fast forward and rewind as fast as any DVR from Directv. This is another great option is we could hook up any size hard drive we want for the space we want. Most of the times in the past with TiVos and such, if they include a hard drive they want triple the price for that functionality. We had an old 320GB external hard drive laying around collecting dust, reformatted it and BAM, it's a DVR drive, woot woot!
I'm pleased with the Simple.TV and think it's a great addition. I personally was waiting until the had a major firmware update and bought it after they applied it. I wanted to right a current review because so many reviews were written as soon as it came out 6 months ago, but it's since had some serious software revisions and it's working well!
I'm very happy with my purchase and look forward to showing off to my buddies what $22 a month can get you! I'll have to take a trip to the beach with all the money $1,200 a year I'll be saving, come an join me, I'll be the guy with the umbrella over his head and an umbrella in his drink where the water is crashing blue and the sand is soft and white ;-) Score one for the creative minds at Simple.TV, rock on!
Pros When it does manage to work properly, it usually produces a recording of reasonably good quality. Roku GUI works OK, except for menu items marked as 'Beta.' No video displayed during FF & RW, which makes navigating recording more difficult.
Cons Unstable recording scheduling; pgms selected may or may not be recorded, as it "self-clears" any episode it happens to feel like doing. Google browser freezes up when scheduling recordings, requiring reload. Unit locks up and pwr plug must be pulled.
Summary I submitted multiple detailed tech. sup. requests and Community User comments for which no replies have been rec'd for over a month now. Tech. sup. is farce!
I purchased >$4K of electronics products in 2012 & this is by far the worst customer experience I've had!! This co. does not deserve to be in business and is selling a product that simply does not work at all as advertised. They treat customers like they are optional and seem to mostly ignore owner tech. sup. requests and user feedback.
"does not work"on by 73guppie
Pros nothing, doesn't work
Cons doesn't work
Summary just does not work, cannot get it to work via roku app, does not stream any video whatsoever
Pros None to speak of.
Cons Too many to list.
Summary If I could give it less than 1 star I would. Waited over a year from it's Kickstarter inception, one delay after another. Finally received it and it will not work with Comcast in my area, which is something that they don't really explain could happen. ClearQAM is required to use this unit and if your broadcast channels are encrypted you are out of luck and if the FCC has their way ALL cable providers will encrypt these channels in the near future rendering this thing into a doorstop.
And if you try to return it, you might as well forget about that too. Their so-called Return Policy within 30 days is a joke, they just keep stalling, sending you to someone else, they need to speak with their supervisor, blah, blah, blah. In addition, I paid $250 for the right to be an early adopter, guess how much they wanted to refund me for this privilege? Only $120 and for reasons never clearly explained
Pros Meets the WAF (wife acceptance factor):
- over-the-air DVR
- stream to roku
Does what I need:
- upgrades are no hassle (compared to HTPC)
- low start up cost and monthly (compared to TIVO)
Cons Drive is formatted with JFS instead of NTFS. Makes it hard to upgrade drives unless you have a linux system. So start with a bigger drive than you think you'll need to buy time until they provide a process for migrating content between drives.
Summary They've resolved the issues my wife and I had with the initial release. If you're still on the fence go to user forum (search on simple.tv satisfaction) to see if there's anything that would be impacting to you.
The future looks bright for this little box.
