"Sweet whole house DVR option for cord cutters!"
5.0 starson by ShuazayPros: Stream over Roku
Use/select your own hardware size (instead of including one and tripling the price)
Excellent speed when using DVR function
Excellent interface
Super cool guide funtionalityCons: Softened picture quality
Limited featuresSummary: The economics of the whole thing is what makes it so appealing. I mean we used to pay $8 monthly for Netflix to get movies and $120 monthly for Directv for all the other stuff for 3 TVs, total $128 a month. We cut the cord, got rid of Directv entirely, added a subscription to Hulu ($8 monthly) and Amazon Prime($70 a year). So now our monthly bill is ~ $22- for all.
This is simply awesome, use for free over the air (OTA) HDTV to stream through ROKU or PC. We have an existing Roku 2 and just bought the Simple.TV box and a ROKU 3. We moved our HDTV antenna from our TV to where the router is now we are streaming the local channels (20) to the 2 ROKU boxes. We're going to buy a third Roku soon! And we can stream to our PCs if we want to. You'd have to buy 3 TiVos to do this (1 for each TV) and that'd cost you over $2000 with service vs 1 Simple.TV and 3 Rokus ~ $500.
DVR functionality is wonderful. We just set this up yesterday, put in our shows on the guide. First show recorded was Arrow on the CW, recorded tonight, we watched it, it looked great. Not as crisp as the HDTV antenna hooked directly up to the TV BUT still HD and the DVR functionality was priceless. The DVR also functions very fast, we could fast forward and rewind as fast as any DVR from Directv. This is another great option is we could hook up any size hard drive we want for the space we want. Most of the times in the past with TiVos and such, if they include a hard drive they want triple the price for that functionality. We had an old 320GB external hard drive laying around collecting dust, reformatted it and BAM, it's a DVR drive, woot woot!
I'm pleased with the Simple.TV and think it's a great addition. I personally was waiting until the had a major firmware update and bought it after they applied it. I wanted to right a current review because so many reviews were written as soon as it came out 6 months ago, but it's since had some serious software revisions and it's working well!
I'm very happy with my purchase and look forward to showing off to my buddies what $22 a month can get you! I'll have to take a trip to the beach with all the money $1,200 a year I'll be saving, come an join me, I'll be the guy with the umbrella over his head and an umbrella in his drink where the water is crashing blue and the sand is soft and white ;-) Score one for the creative minds at Simple.TV, rock on!
