"Simple.tv is an excellent idea poorly executed."0.5 starson by ledouglasj
Pros: When it works, it will record shows on channels where it recognizes the channel and the show. The unit has a small footprint and has no fan to cause noise (or fail). Shipping is relatively fast.
Cons: No phone support. Troubleshooting is by email.
Shoddy quality based on my experience with one DOA unit & a replacement that works occasionally.
No instruction manual with the device or online.
Cannot simply record at a set date & time.
Summary: When I bought my simple.tv online, I thought that the chances I would get a dud would be low so I wouldn't have to experience the poor customer support I suspected would accompany a website with no telephone number. I regret that decision. The device shipped with no phone number as well and arrived DOA. After (literally) several months of troubleshooting by email and threatening to get vocal about my experience, I was finally sent a replacement unit. The replacement unit was thankfully not DOA but does not consistently function so I have renewed my email relationship with customer support. The warranty is one year. I never would have imagined that after almost a year, I would still have a unit that doesn't work as advertised. The user interface of the device is web based. Although I recently read on the website that an iPad app had been developed, there is still no iphone, android, or windows app. You can only view what's on TV through a web page. The unit does not send a signal to your TV. To watch it on your TV you will have to purchase an additional device (Roku).
The biggest disappointment for me was that there is no way to simply set the device to record at a date an time. The device will only record shows that it can identify in its guide so if you have a local channel that is either not recognized by the unit or a show that does not appear on your simple.tv guide, you cannot record it. Using the web based UI is clunky and feels more like a cheap trick than a refined user experience.
The best features of the device are only available if you subscribe to a monthly fee based service. The problem with that is, if I wanted a monthly fee, I would just subscribe to cable, Dish, or Tivo.
