"Why pay $800 now?!?"
Pros: Everything you've ever wanted in a DVR
Cons: It costs $800 freakin' dollars! (+$13/month)
Summary: Man did I want to buy this, but how can one justify the premium? As a LONG TIME tivo user, Tivo shareholder
, and overall HDTV junkie I WANTED this product. But for 2 years I?ve been suffering through the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD?s horrible interface, lack of network options, etc. and have finally adapted to it. I?ve even trained my wife to use it. Now this comes out and somehow I have to think of the ?yes it is about the same, honey, but here?s why we need to spend $800 so I can check fantasy scores/weather/movie times on Tivo? argument. Not going to happen. Now I?m going to have to wait several more years for the price to someday fall and continue to suffer through the 8300HD. DARN you TIVO!

C-net needs to screen out pseudo-reviews of this type where the person never even tried out the product.

Finally a tivo that can replace the hd setbox! But for $800 and higher subscription fees to boot it will have to wait. I too will suffer with the SA settop box awhile longer.

I have DirecTV, so I can't even connect this model. Why doesn't TiVo build a model everyone can use?

At $800 and an additional $199 to transfer my lifetime subscription (which Tivo no longer offers), it would take 10 years for the new Tivo3 HD to pay for itself compared to the $9.95 per month I pay now for a Comcast Motorola HD DVR. Comcast would charge $6.95 for the 2nd cable card needed to use the dual tuner, so I'd only save $3 per month.
In 10 years, everything will be different and delivery & storage of TV & movie content will be much more advanced.
so I'm sticking with my Comcast DRV for HD and my two Tivo boxes for other shows. -
Complaining about the price IS part of a fair review. He is not reviewing specific performance issues. It is totally fair to complain about the price, which is way too high. They are practically giving series 2 boxes away, when you sign up for a subscription, and the new box is $800? Does that not seem like a shock to anyone else?

grow a sack and shell out the dough... after that, right a real review.

dw333,
Since you don't own a HD TiVo and never used one, how on Earth can you review it and rate it honestly and objectively?
All your review is based on is reading of other people writing. The company's. Reviewers. Specs wherever you got them.
Seems to me you are rating the PRICE of the TiVo HD recorder and pouting because you can't afford one yet (and don't wear the pants in your household).
Even though I don't respect unobjective reviewers like you, I'll share a tip with you out of mercy.
Why don't you call TiVo directly and POLITELY ask them about "the VIP upgrade offer for Lifetime subscribers of Series 2". Maybe they will make an exception and accomodate you. Good luck, and try to keep your future reviews useful to the rest of us readers - not as a company complaint center for products you don't own. Thank you.
