    "sony quality? thats an oxymoron"

by egarnett on June 13, 2005

Pros: price for HD is right but...

Cons: this much aggravation is not worth the savings

Summary: My set died and the ONLY repair faciility in Metro Washington, DC worked on it for three months before my numerous phone calls to sony persuaded them to replace it. My new one has some tuner problem now and there is a quality problem on the edges. Strauss video repair was so bad that i don't even want to call it in again.
Do some checking on the authorized repair facilities in your area before you buy a sony because with ONE in a major city, you will get left holding a 200 lb. piece of junk.

this experience has convinced me that after my sony tuner, sony dvd carousel, sony md player, sony dig cam, two other sony tv's, and sony laptop, i will NEVER buy sony again.

sounds to me like a Egarnett Problem, not a Sony Problem. i made sure to check who would repair it if anything breaks before i bought mine.

That Sony set is about the best tube 16:9 HDTV in the world. So you had a bad unit, oh well, things happen, get over it.

If this guy is so turned off by Sony, why on earth did he keep buying Sony products?
    Perhaps he's a masochist?
Seriously though, if he had better luck with previous purchases, he should have returned the set to the retailer and demanded a replacement as a long-standing customer!

all the companys making this junk needs to have a place that you can email and vent about there customer no-service and products. but the only thing they are interested in is the sale and thats to bad

Sony has great technology but it doesn't seem to work.
Every Sony product I have puchased seems to break due to poor design or QC. Switched to Panasonic and have been happu ever since.

I had bought a psp around the time it came out and after 2 months it had faulty defects. I called Sony's consumer services line and they told me to ship it to them for repairs. The only thing they didn't tell me to do was to insure so it had no tracking number. I guess it was my first time shipping a package so I really had no experience. Even until now they haven't done a thing and I called 6-10 times asking where's my psp. They gave me the most bs excuse everytime.

This change my mind from buying Sony again because of its horrible consumer services and products.

LoL everytime to go to the mall with my friends I always go in front of the Sony store and yell "Sony sucks like crap!" and some guy would look at me angrily and I would give him the finger. haha I laugh at that stupid guy because he couldn't do a thing.

I am always skeptical of extreme rants against companies who have consistently been industry leaders.

I understand the complaint but have two questions.

The first is this: is the support for any other brand any better (geographically speaking)? Would buying any other brand have made a difference? Is this a rant against Sony or the repair shop (which may repair all tv's for the retailer this person bought from)?

The second question is did this person make every effort to find alternate solutions to the problem.

Based on my personal experiences, I would have returned this product to the source and either tried another of the same or insisted on a different product. Well short of 2 months I would have been in contact with Sony to demand a replacement.

This guy obviously has heartburn with a repair facility and is using that as an excuse to rate a product as a "1". I doubt he grasps the concept of these reviews.

I was going to buy this TV because with HD it looks like you're watching a moving picture. It is that sharp and crisp. After watching for some time I couldn't help but notice two or more very thin black lines across the screen. I always saw at least 2 lines (sometimes I thought I saw more) one about a 3rd of the way down the screen, the other about 2/3 of the way down the screen. It was such a glaring defect I almost laughed. Surely there was something wrong. In fact I noticed all of the Sony high def capable TV's on the floor had this. And this was at separate stores. Someone told me it's from the interface where each of the 3 picture tube guns' projections meet. Whatever it is, it spoiled the picture enough to prompt me to get an LCD instead. I would not buy this until Sony quality improves.

I have a Sony projector (VPLHS20) & within a few weeks out of the box I noticed distortion on the picture. After I spent $90.00 on shipping & insurance it took them a month to send it back. They did nothing to it & then told me the distortion was normal!?!?! I ended up sending them .jpg pictures of the visible "rings" on the screen & they then told me they would fix it. The only problem now is I'm afraid to send it back since I'll only probably get the same garbage again, or worse...

We had similar experiences with a Sony PS-2. The DVD player kept going bad, Sony would send it back after warranty work and it would work about 2 weeks and go out again. After several phone calls, the PS-2 went into the trash. X-box is better, and like you I will never buy Sony again.
