"Should never have been brought on the market"
Pros: Absolutely beautiful picture...
Cons: ...as long as you don't care that it can't produce a straight line
Summary: I really wanted this baby to work. A stunning picture, no pixelation, viewable at all angles, works well in bright rooms, no tracers, fairly good low def pictures but...
The first one I took home had vertical line problems which was very noticable when watching 4:3 programming in pillarbox. The top and bottom of the picture flared out 1/2" on each side. Repairman could not fix it. Sony said return it.
The second unit had a similar problem although not nearly as bad. I could live with it. But there were horizontal line problems. The Directv program guide had waves all over the place. The bottom bar on 2.35:1 movies such as LOTR (which are letterboxed even on a 16:9 screen) curved up on the right side and the top bar curved down. Again, the repairman could not fix this because there was no adjustment. He informed me geometry problems are very common problem on large tube flat screens.
Sorry folks but I can't afford to drop 2 grand on a Sony experiment that didn't work. Sony should be embarrassed to have brought this on the market. Back to the store and open to suggestions. I realize now I will have to pay more. Am considering the new Panasonic 37" plasma or Sharp 37" LCD, both available for under 3Gs.
