Great Product - But Beware of BM!by - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
PQ Partition Magic 7.0 (PM) is a great product! Works as advertised - total disk management from within Win XP with no problems - even when used by "Non-Techys" or "GUI Guys" (which I am). But, BEWARE! The User Manual and on-line docs are terrible! If you install BootMagic (BM)to switch between OS's to support running multiple OS's, you'll have problems. BM must be installed to a FAT primary partition after you install your OS's - AND, you must access the configuration window of BM and set the options to turn off the "hide partitions" default, or you'll have major difficulties, and you won't be able to access the BM configuration window, or uninstall BM, without a lot of agony! Once BM is installed it hides all primary partitions (including itself), and won't permit the user to make its partition visible to repair or uninstall the application. BM also conflicts with PM and forces the user to run both PM and BM in the DOS mode from the rescue diskettes, rather than Win XP. If you happen to install BM without changing the "hide partitions" default, you can solve the problem by the following: 1. Convert the BM primary partition to a logical patition - this makes it visible to the system. 2. Create a new primary partition. 3. Install BM to the new primary partition. 4. Run install BM from the PQ PM CD and uninstall BM - this will remove it from your HD. 5. Run install PM from the PQ PM CD and unistall PM. 6. Search for and remove all remaining files for BM and PM. 7. Format the two partitions where BM was installed. 8. Install PM from the PQ PM CD. And you'll be back in control of your system! You'll have to run all the above routines in DOS from the rescue diskettes of PM and BM, until you get to the final step and reinstall PM. Of course PQ tells you none of this in their documentation - great company! Are we having fun yet?!?

Don't even try to install this program on your PC if you are using an XP NTFS partition, I've got a 80 GB HD, I needed to make some smaller partitions to store my files as I needed (and I still need) to format my PC. I can't resize my partition. I can't convert to FAT32 my partition. The program has created itself a 24 MB "unallocaed" space on my hard drive!! Totally crazy. The worst experience ever. Now I have to manage to find a good partition manager.

Beware of using this program in conjunction with other partition software; it reacts very badly to changes made by other software. I have dual-boot Linux/Windows systems that work fine, but PM gags on them. Personally I will stick with GNU parted. Like all things linux it has a steep learning curve but once you're over the hill it works better than Windows based-software. And its free!

When I was finished and i rebooted my program files all went currupt and told me bogus file sizes and names. I had to reformat my computer and install windows again. DO NOT buy this software for use with XP/NTFSby - September 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I already owned Partition Magic 4 and loved it for use on my Windoze 98 SE system but PowerQuest said I had to buy PM 7.0 for use with XP. So I bought it and installed it on my Dell Dimension 8200, which Dell shipped with the 80 Gb Maxtor setup as one big primary NTFS partition. I told PM 7 to do one thing - resize C: to 30 Gb - and said "Go." Immediately after it rebooted into DOS, it locked the system up hard, saying, "Error 100 - Partition Table is Bad." Only powering down would reboot it and all subsequent reboots only took me back to the same Error 100 place. Nothing would abort the boot process except booting on the PM 7 rescue floppies, which offered more info but no solutions. I could also boot to DOS, of course, but DOS can't even see an NTFS parttion, let alone fix it. Fortunately, I do regular backup images, writing them to another hard drive and CD-Rs with Drive Image 2002 so I was able to restore my system. I got through to PowerQuest the next day but they could only suggest that I should have run chkdsk /f before I tried to resize an NTFS partition and/or I should convert my NTFS primary partition to FAT32 before resizing it(!). So I ran chkdsk and tried to resize four more times (yeah, I'm REALLY stubborn). PM 7 make the HDD un-bootable each time except the last. The secret seems to be to run PM 7 only in DOS from the rescue disks and not to try to resize an NTFS partition by more than half because that overwrites the file table located mid-partition. If you do what I did, resize an 80 to 30, it creates file location errors. They can be fixed but you don't want to go there if you can avoid it. In summary, I finally got PM 7 to do what I wanted but it took a weekend and four full 11 Gb restores before I figured out how. PowerQuest's help line isn't much help and the manual is worse than no help, it's actually misleading. My advice is NOT to buy Partition Magic 7 for use with XP in an NTFS partition or, if you do, have verified backup images available and know how to use them.

"No Problemo"by - September 21, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
PM 7.0 performed exactly as represented by PM and the CNet Review. I used the PM Wizard on my 30 gig HD with 3 partitions, and the Win XP OS, to move two partitions, and resize (increase) the "C" partition, allocating the space from the "E" partition - all in less than 45 minutes. This allowed me to completely defragment the "C" partition (which you can't if there is too little free space), as well as to run System Restore without running to low on free space on the "C" partition. And you don't have to be a techie to do it - the PM Wizard provides a totally GUI interface. Absolutely, a great product - "all runs, all hits, no errors."

Now here is the strange part PTmj now labels Disk1 as BAD, but I can still boot XP and Linux. XP sees my partions within the linux areas, although it cann't tell what type they are (normal). Fun part is only option PTmj gives is to reformat the drive. PTmj must think I AM High if I will let their program try and repair the damage their program has allready caused!!!

I have used this program for close to one year and haven't had any problems. I've used it to create partitions for Win98, WinME, Win2000, and WinXP. At the same time, I've created different types of partitions, merged them, deleted them, resized the partitions, joined, and ajust about everything you can think of. And haven't had any problems. When I got WinMe, I created a new partion and installed ME on it and it worked great. Same with WinXp and all other windows' flavors. When I'm done with those flavors, I've deleted them, and either deleted the partitions or merged them with existing partions. Nowadays, I use it so I can dual boot with Win2000 and Win98 on one system, and use the program now mainly to squeeze as much space from my C

as possible. Haven't had problems at all with it. The dual boot program that comes with the app doesn't work to well, and even messed up Win2000 dual-boot options, so I don't use it, but aside from that issue, everything has worked perfectly for me.

Since it first arrived on the scene, I was amazed my what Powerquest Partition Magic could do. I'm still amazed as they add new features to each version. Rather than typing in archaic dos commands, you are given a simple GUI interface with which to manipulate your hard disks. Create, delete, convert, hide, rename, etc. Five star utility.

Boot diskettes a problemby - October 23, 2001

Powerquest needs to perfect their DOS boot diskette creation so that it works with Win2K. When I reported this problem to tech support, they told me to create the boot floppies on a Win98 machine! Try Paragon Partition Mgr instead.

I still miss the excellent move utility from PM 5, but this is one utility I don't think I could be without, particularly with several computers and OSs here.

A Must!by - October 22, 2001

This utility is a must when resizing partions and not wanting MS Windows to complain. It's true that Linux will resize partitions nicely, but Windows will not always recognize the new size. The only way to correct that I've seen has been to reinstall. Personally, I prefer a more elegant way of taking care of business.

You don't need it!by - October 22, 2001

If you can get a Linux (mandrake) installation somewhere, start the Linux installation, where there will be a place in it that allows you to adjust your drive partitions. What you can do in the Linux installation is re-adjust your current partition, then quit without installing linux, then run the Win XP installation program where you can format it into NTFS or FAT32. It's quick and simple, and you don't need to spend $49.95.

This upgrade lacks enough new features to back up the $49.95 upgrade price. Stick with six unless your planning on playing with Windows XP.
