PartitionMagic 8 (discontinued)

PartitionMagic 8

Entered CNET Catalog: 09/28/2002

SKU: PM80ENK1

Manufacturer: PowerQuest Corp.

Manufacturer description

Partitioning allows you to manage your hard drive more efficiently. Your computer views each partition as a separate hard drive, automatically giving it a drive letter, allowing you to conveniently organize your hard drive and maximize the performance of your system. Dividing your hard drive into separate partitions plays an essential role in maintaining your computer-preventing conflicts, protecting data, improving efficiency, and increasing performance. PowerQuest's award-winning PartitionMagic 8 allows you to separate data files, operating systems, applications, games, and downloads by creating and resizing partitions quickly and easily, without reformatting your hard drive or harming your data. BootMagic, included with PartitionMagic, enables you to safely load and run multiple operating systems (OSes) on the same computer without conflict. Test a new OS without giving up the stability of the OS you are currently using. PartitionMagic also includes PQBoot, which enables you to select which OS to run on your next reboot while running in Windows.

As hard drive volumes push well beyond 100GB in size, it makes sense to divide those megadrives into smaller, more manageable partitions--whether you want to run multiple operating systems, simplify backups, or just organize your overall file system. Though PartitionMagic 8.0 offers few substantial improvements over its past two iterations, this version delivers powerful tools to create, merge, split, copy, and convert partitions without the need to reformat your hard drive. Note, however, that you can inadvertently render your system unbootable or destroy important data with this deceptively simple software. Turn to PartitionMagic only if you're a power user with a good understanding of hard drives and file systems.

Cleaner interface
With the aid of the included quick-start guide, PartitionMagic 8.0 installs easily within a standard Windows setup routine. Launch the program, and you'll see an XP-style interface that has a more organized and cleaner look than version 7.0's. Buttons on the left lead to the software's key functions and launch so-called tasks--wizards that guide you through common procedures.

On the right, you'll find easy-to-understand tree diagrams that show the partition structure, free space, and color-coded file system formats. Click a drive diagram and select the function you wish to perform. Once you're finished specifying all your changes, select Apply. In some cases, PartitionMagic will perform the modifications live within Windows, but usually, it will automatically restart the PC and perform the changes during the boot process. If you change your mind, you can always reverse your current course of action and start over.

Version 8.0 adds only a few features of note. A file browser lets you copy files and directories from one partition to another, and now, PartitionMagic supports partition sizes up to 160GB as well as Linux Ext3 partitions and FireWire and USB 2.0 drives within Windows. A new feature in PQBoot, the helpful PartitionMagic utility that lets you juggle multiple operating systems, lets you specify within Windows which operating system to run on restart.

Danger lurks within
But don't let PartitionMagic's ease of use fool you; considerable danger is inherent in futzing with hard disk partitions--even with PartitionMagic. For example, it's all too easy to make a partition disappear or make your entire system unbootable. When things do go wrong, you must boot to DOS with rescue floppies that you created during the software installation process (or, you can boot from the PartitionMagic installation CD). It would be nice if PartitionMagic would alert you of potential operations that might make your system unstable.

If you do get yourself into a partition pickle, PowerQuest's toll-free phone technical support is available for free for 30 days, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. MT, Monday through Friday. After that, you'll have to fork over $30 per incident and $95 per incident after business hours. E-mail support is offered free for the life of the product. We sent in a query via the company's Web site and received a satisfactory reply the next day. The site also includes detailed FAQs and an extensive searchable troubleshooting database. But alas, although PartitionMagic 7.0 came with a 150-page printed manual, 8.0 includes information in a PDF file--especially vexing since you'll need to refer to the manual when you may not be able to boot Windows to view it.

If you're already using PartitionMagic 7.0, the few new features in 8.0 aren't worth the $49.95 to upgrade. However, for anyone who deals with disk partitions regularly or wants to run multiple operating systems, the power and flexibility of PartitionMagic is hard to beat.

PartitionMagic 8.0's wizards simplify the process of setting up disk partitions--even if you run multiple operating systems.

Not bad but there are better

Pros: Easy to learn if you are an advanced user

Cons: interface could be a little less congested

Review: I have compared this program to my favorite back-up and hard drive manager software. If you want to see some tried and true programs, visit my site www.tctu.com and download the the disk manager program I have on my site.

Updated on Oct 16, 2008

After further tests, I find Partition Magic to be just fine (glitch in original install). Acronis 8, Hard Disk Manager 2008 have also been tested. I like them all. My favorite is still HDM 2008.

Worth nothing

Pros: Not found any

Cons: You loose data

Review: Made the big mistake to buy this product... no wonder the evaluation copy does not do anything... so you cannot see how buggy the product is.
Shortly, first use of the product was to merge 2 partitions... some error came up and I lost one partition, I lost the data in that partition.
Second use... to merge the unused space on the disk. Guess what? Another error. Luckily, I had backed up my disk.
So, you want to re-arrange your partitions? Copy all the data on some other drive, delete all partitions, create new ones, then move the data back. But you do not need PartitionMagic to do this, right?
KEEP YOUR MONEY

Look elsewhere

Pros: works with basic disks

Cons: does not work with dynamic disks

Review: I once liked Norton Products but am now going to look elsewhere. They don't tell you that Partition Magic only works with basic drives so if yours is a dynamic drive it won't work. I found out when I finally contacted customer service - the reply was it dosen't work with dynamic drives a - and there was no solution. I don't understand why they don't make it clear before you buy the product.

Have on 4 computers

Pros: I have had PM since PM7. I have it on 3 desktops and 1 laptop all with WinXP. Haven't had any problems until now.

Cons: On my main desktop I just did a clean install from W2K that had PM7 and then PM8 on it to WinXP. When I tried starting PM up, it would lock up computer, tried repair same thing. Uninstalled and then put it back on with patch, same thing. Uninstalled and

No problems on XP Home or with Norton Systemworks

Pros: I've had none of the problems other reviews mention. So far I used PM 8.0 to: delete a partition, resize a partition (bigger), convert a partion from FAT to NTFS, create a new partition using free space, change a partition size (smaller)

Cons: None here

Cons:

Boot Magic Doesn't recognize other drives

Pros:

Miraculous, but...

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It saved my neck after I had to un-partition my 4GB C: drive (re-combining what had been logical drive partitions D and E) so that I could install software. The downside was that I had installed Norton Systemworks 2001 on Drive D, which behave erratically now, can't run in auto-protect mode, and can't even be re-installed. So I find myself having to perform more virus scans myself. Kinda scary

Killed My Drive!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Went to change the cluster size on my Win2K drive(that was converted from FAT32 to NTFS with small clusters). PM-8.0 destroyed the drive. When I called for support, I was asked to _pay_ for support to help fix it, did so and received advice that made the drive unrecoverable. Oh, and by the way, there were some _undocumented_ restrictions when changing cluster size (guess my ESP wasn't working). First I complained and was told to call Ontrack! Later they grudgingly credited my credit card for the crappy support, making sure I understood that they charge for support whether or not their techs actually know what they're doing. This software is DANGEROUS, and their disregard for customers is extreme even by packaged software support standards.

Works well with Win 2K

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Recently used 8.0 to partition my two hard drives, one a 6.2 GB with data on it. The other an Iomega 80 GB USB external drive (even though Iomega doesn't recommend partitioning this drive). Everything went as it should.

Excellent tool if you are not a novice

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I had a very positive experience with PartitionMagic (PM-8.0). I installed it on Windows XP, and converted a single 60GB NTFS partition to 15 partitions of various types: NTFS, FAT, FAT-32, and Linux EXT2 and Linux Swap. If you have a basic understanding of what disk partitioning is all about, and if you know what exactly you wish to do, this is the tool to use. If you are a total novice, who has no idea why and how a disk should be partitioned, you may be well advised to stay away from it. My PM-8.0 package also included BootMagic (BM-8.0). You may not care about BM-8.0, unless you want a multi-boot machine. I needed BM-8.0 functionality so that I can boot to Linux and Windows both. In comparison to PM-8.0, BM-8.0 is a primitive tool. Its documentation is poor, and even incorrect sometimes. For example, it claims you can install it on any logical FAT or FAT-32 partition. This is true, you can install it; but you cannot boot other operating systems from it afterwards if you have Windows NT or XP with an NTFS file system, and if the other operating system is booted from a logical partition. To avoid this problem, I had to redo everything from scratch and reinstall BM-8.0 on a primary FAT partition, which also meant re-partitioning the entire disk by PM-8.0, which fortunately saved the day. In summary: I highly recommend PM-8.0 with the caveats mentioned above. If you also decide to use BM-8.0, I can tell you that it works fine, but be cautious.

PQMagic 8 has XP Pro problems

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Looks like PQM8 isn't able to keep up with the many file system intricacies. I've used it since ver. 3... and when my Ver. 7.01 refused to perform under Win XP, I foolishly upgraded to ver. 8... so sad that this product falls so short.

Works fine with 95/98/Me/XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Have been using it for many years; has always worked perfectly for me. Don't understand what people say about not working on XP. Has gotten me out of problems several times with the Bootable diskettes, when I was running my 5 OS from the same puter.

DOES NOT WORK WITH XP NTFS FILE SYSTEMS DUE TO A NEW FILE FORMAT

Pros:

Cons:

Review: AS OF YET, IMPOSSIBLE TO FIX. ANYONE WHO SAYS IT WORKS FLAWLESSLY WITH XP NTFS FILE SYSTEMS IS "WORKING" FOR POWERQUEST.

Worked great with XP Home

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I upgraded to XP from 98 and upgraded PM from 6 to 8. PM8 worked great from the start. Partitioned my hd finto 5 drives with no problems. I like that they no longer move the cd/dvd drives, it saves a lot of time.

The Last Copy I'll buy(V7.01)

Pros:

Cons:

Review: If you can install it and it works it works good. If on the other hand it doesn't work you are out of luck. Have used PM since V3 and am fed up with it. Works on one XP machine but won't run on the other. Most serious problem with PM is it's not doing an error check until it has spent 30 minutes re-partitioning and formatting then fails and says run MS Scandisk to fix. Of course scandisk finds no problem so end of story. I kept upgrading hoping they would fix it but I see any reason to waste another $70, I'll go with someone else.

Works Perfectly With XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I don't get what all the people are saying about problems with XP. I run a dual boot with Win98SE and WInXP Home, and I've never had a problem. I move partitions around at will, combine them, add new ones, and it's performed flawlessly. The only issue I did have is that I also installed BootMagic, and accidentally deleted on of the boot options. But that was 100% user error (me), and was easily fixed in DOS. Like I said, I don't get what people are talking about regarding XP, because for me it works flawlessly.

The best partitioning software you can get.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is the #1 software that I know of. As long as you are a power-user (have a lot of experience) then this is a program that I HIGHLY recommend. However, like many utilities, it will be very unfriendly if you are not a power user. Although it has a PDF help file, it does have a flash tutorial, wich runs over the basics.

Boot Magic does not work with NTFS

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I followed the instructions to the letter and I simply doesn't function. Thank God I made the rescue disks.

It works very well with XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: PM8 is great, it works well. Beware of user comments. The blanket statemnt, DOES NOT WORK WITH XP, is wrong. It might not have worked for you and with your current system set-up, there is more going on in that box than just PM and XP. Tech support fixes most issues and for free if the program is not doing what it says it will do. They want $30 when they have to 'hold your hand' but when it comes to error messages they are the best. Cheer up.

Awesome,Great Product

Won't work with my XP Partition.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: It was able to reside my Win2k partitions just fine but when trying to resize my XP partitions I get the 1513 error. It is NOT WinXP compatable.

XP what?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have used previous versions of PM and it has always been my primary tool to partition and check for errors on the disks. With XP, version 8.0it is just not working at all. So I will wait for the next version that should be able to handle it. Both disks on my PC that do have a lot of partitions show up as a single yellow block. Both disks are in FAT32, and the same shows when a single partition or all are in NTFS. Simply a waste of money for XP users. Looking forward (and counting the months already) for the next version.

User Rating: 3/10

OK but beware of booby-traps

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I started using PM3 about 5 years ago and was pleased with ease of operation and rock solid stability. After upgrading to Wind XP and PM7 (and then PM8) I have had many problems, e.g., not being able to boot and having to reinstall the operating system. A central difficulty is the documentation, which is inadequate or inaccurate or both, and which the Powerquest technical support people admit generates numerous complaints. They pointed out to me that some of the statements in the documentation are wrong or misleading, as are some of the error messages. It should be a great program but it's full of hidden hazards.

User Rating: 6/10

Very good, apart from its lack of compatibility with XP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is an excellent product except for the error #1513 problem. This seems to be an XP compatibility problem which shouldn't exist since the product is supposed to be XP compatible. Poerquest really have an obligation to sort this out... and soon.

Expensive lesson

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Having used Partition Magic 8.0 and Drive Image 2002, I strongly recommend BootIt NG as a better program for partitioning and imaging hard drives. It*s easier, faster and more stable, and unlike PowerQuest products, BootIt on my Windows XP, performs exactly as advertised, and being a shareware, you can test drive before purchase. Had I been given that option with PM 8.0 and DI 2002, I would never have purchased those programs.

The Best Hard Disk Manager

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Generally I use FDisk to do partition on my system. I purchased PM8 in December'02. I didn't read the manual, but still able to use it effectively for my work. Now, I have win98, win2000 and WinXP Prof on my workstation. PM8 works great with all of them. Improve performance of XP by resizing the cluster. Move partitions here and there. Safeguard your personal sensitive info on to a partition. You can also do backup of your personal sensitive data using datakeeper. A Very Nice P(M8)roduct. Makes tough time-consuming works very easy.

Performed as adverstised with WinXP

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I installed the product under Windows XP with no difficulty. I used it without incident to resize and move my primary NTFS partition to make room for a Linux /boot file system. I concur with the reviewer's comments that this is NOT a product for those who do not have an understanding of disk management.

The Best Hard Drive Management Utilty Out There.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Partion Magic 7.0 was great but this is even better. The interface has been given a more XPish look. The ability to access files from other partitions which are OS dependant is also great.

User Rating: 10/10

It works with XP - Who are these losers?

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I have 2 partitions W98SE and XPHE. I use BootMagic at startup and pick whichever OS I choose. Don't blame the software because you don't know how to use it. The PDF files are quite comprehensive. I printed what I needed to know (only a few pages). Who needs another user manual lying around.

Isn't XP compatible; bad service

Pros:

Cons:

Review: First of all, it's $30 per phone call to get support. You can email them. . . good luck. Next, I've got Windows XP with NTFS. Any time I try to do ANYTHING with PM, it gives me Error 1513. Here's what their web site says about that error: "A file record's first attribute begins after the end of the attribute. This error can also occur in Windows 2000/XP because of a new file record format that has been added to Windows 2000/XP. When PowerQuest products detect this new format, they interpret it as an Error 1513." In other words, the product is not XP compatible.
