"They're giving it away for FREE!"

4.5 stars  | on by kcytron

Pros

I use it for Outlook and Eudora. They also added capabiltiy to searche for music and photos. I have yet to have X1 not find a file type and I have some pretty arcane file types.

Cons

have to use cache mode if you have 9K or more emails for quick rendering in the preview pane

Summary

X1 just announced they're giving it away for free! The new release can search on photo & music files as well as calendar & tasks items in Outlook.

I love the preview pane so I can see the documents in my search results and and I can click on the file to launch the application it was created in. I never leave the X1 UI.

It was a great product for $79. Now it's even better for free!

"This program is my right arm."

5 stars  | on by Tree Doctor

Pros

The index is already created. There is no waiting for a search. It truly is "as fast as you type". Powerful Boolean logic that is actually Boolean!! "AND" means "AND", and "OR" means "OR" and "NOT" means "NOT"

Cons

Since I upgraded to the current release, which handles detachable drives, I can think of none.

Summary

I have grown a bit frustrated telling people about this program, and getting this dull look that says, "Oh, yeah? That's nice.".

I have grown a bit frustrated telling people about this program, and getting this dull look that says, "Oh, yeah? That's nice.".

I find it difficult to adequately convey how indispensable this program is, and how much it aids and speeds my use of the computer. Trying to find something? A file? an email?......and email attachment? (Good luck searching in Outlook!!!!!!) All it takes is remembering SOMETHING about it....ANYTHING.... a name, .... a unique word or phrase. If it's on the computer, X1 will find it, open it, and launch it.

I have just upgraded to vista and had heard so much positive things about it search abilities that I could hardly wait to use it. Well its not bad for titles but not for content. I had used the beta x-1 (yahoo desktop search) on xp and except for some crashing (beta remember) I was happy. So I decided to upgrade to the real thing which I knew was free....well not anymore. Looked for a replacement Cnet recommended copernic. What a disappointment.
X-1 is far superior. Want to see the email in orig. form x-1 is there for you. Want to search for "exi*ent.pdf". X-1 shines. Others not so much.

unfortunately I now after trying the new version on vista and see all the problems I had installing the pay for version on xp found this product is not worth the bandwidth let alone the money. The install was problematic because it would not index. Apparently it wont install properly if you change the install directory. And then it took quite a few hoops to get it running properly and too much time to find the answer to the problem. I have never had this kind of problem when installing a program. It seems absurd to have this happen in 2008. I did finally get it working properly on xp but refused fo find movie files. Then on vista the same install problem existed but when I finally got it running it would not index Window mail and would not find media files.
I now give this a 0 out of 5 avoid it.
