Indispensable small office software, but slow and prone to crashes.by - June 18, 2003
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I've used PaperPort in all its versions for years. I can't do without it, but feel that PaperPort peaked around Ver 6 or 7. Ver 8 has more functionality, but they also forgot earlier features like: the one-click rotate for left or right, instead of having to click clockwise up to 3 times in page view till you get what you want, the page auto-straighten-on-scanning feature, and the ability to define which folder to scan new items into. You must also now accept the default folder as your "root folder". You can include other folders in the folder window, but you can't delete this one. PaperPort seems to be using Win's Indexing Service, as searches are unbelievably slow, so much so, that sometimes they don't complete. Its loading time is also slow. Both of these negate the value of an otherwise great idea. Its indexing feature no longer offers the option to skip files which will not index for one reason or another, so indexing can be a babysitting affair. Lastly, I'm dismayed at reading user comments on Version 9.0; I was about to upgrade! Ver 8.0 PDF handling is at at best mediocre, as regards speed and legibility. Compressed lines like an old fashioned Fax? Come on! And lastly, Ver 8.0 crashes, mostly (but not only) because the poor Strobe Scanner often speaks (or is spoken to) out of turn. Even in Win 2000, only a reboot will do. PaperPort used to be a great product, and still has an an amazingly loyal following. Scansoft shouldn't issue newfangled upgrades. I for one would happily pay the upgrade price to receive Ver 8.01 (Ver 8.0 with all the above fixed).

Crashes on every start-up on XPby - December 28, 2002

Review:
I used to use PaperPort 7.0 without much trouble. Then I upgraded to XP. PaperPort didn't work, crashing at every start-up. I then went out and paid good money to get PaperPort 8.0, assuming that this was one of the few programs that didn't make the jump from W2K to XP. I was furious to find that the exact same error occured. All of my efforts since have been fruitless. I did succeed in getting my scans out of that PaperPort format so I can use them again. But I have paid for two versions of a program that isn't compatible with XP - although it says on the box that it is! Wouldn't recommend anyone to invest their time into scanning in uncommon file formats. Even if it works now - what about the next OS upgrade? Are you sure all of your documents will still be readable?

I may no longer need my file cabinet !!by - November 23, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
In the roughly 10 days that I have owned this program, I have been able use it to remove a good five inches of paper from my file cabinet. I have experienced no bugs, whatsoever. A preliminary testing of the search feature suggests that it works better than I would have expected. I scanned in monthly bank statements. The statement cycle would end early in the following month. So a March statement might end April 7th, for example. This statement, I would then label, April 7, 19xx. When I enter March 19xx in search, the April 19xx statement appears, reflecting all the banking activity from the preceding month of March. That impressed me. I tried burning the scanned image files onto a CD using Roxio. It worked beautifully. I had set my scans for black and white at 300 dpi. Roughly four inches worth of paper consumed 35 megabytes. The CD still had another 650 megs or so of free space for me to use. When you think that you might be able to reduce an entire file cabinet to one CD, it's pretty remarkable. I kept thinking that if there were a fire in my home, I could grab just this one small CD and potentially save every important document I had. Images viewed through PaperPort are viewable as thumbnails that, when clicked, become full size (with zooming available). However, I found that when I copied the images to a CD and tried to view them through Windows instead of PaperPort, I no longer was able to see thumbnail images. However, the document file names were still there, and by double clicking, I could still pull up a great image of the original. So you don't have to pre-install PaperPort on another computer in order to access your images there. I have not yet had to use support, so I cannot comment on how good it is. There is room for improvement. For example it might be nice if the program could anticipate file name entries as you are entering them. This would save valuable time, since the process of converting mounds of paper files to digital ones can be somewhat lengthy. But this program's short-comings have so far been far outweighed by what it can do. I highly recommend this product. If you do buy it, be sure to visit the ScanSoft web site. They periodically post free product upgrades there. The system can determine if you need one. As it turned out, my new software already required an upgrade that I was able to easily install.

Good luck if you are connected to Scansof through their products or in any other way.by - October 10, 2002

Review:
Scansoft does not maintain its software as most developers do. It does not provide up-to-date patches, upgrades, etc. It does not care to much about its customers because it thinks that it has the only document imaging solutions that we must depend on. They were lazy about udating the code in 'Pagis' which is a document scanning solution much more superior than 'Paperport' and istead stuck with 'Paperport.' The problem is that 'Paperport' has not changed much since version 4,5. So what do they do to get you to bite on version 8? They give a few megabytes of webspace to make you think that this application is in sinch with internet technology. Also, when one thinks that 'Paperport' contains the awful, useless 'TextBridge Pro' OCR engine, it makes one feel like throwing up. My suggestion: Get 'Presto PageManager ver. 4.80' from www.newsoft.com for $50 and save yourself $50+ on 'PaperPort. If you also want real OCR function get their 'Presto OCR PRO, ver 4' for about $100 and you will be amazed not frustrated. You were informed.

Fantastic Idea, Terrible Executionby - August 21, 2002
Pros:

Review:
I migrated from PP 7.0 to 8.0 in a Windows 2000 environment. Big Mistake! The new features were conceptually attractive, but the application has been a complete disaster in implementation. PP 8.0 consumes 100% of my processor even when in idle. It cranks up my computer's cooling fans, and makes every other application work at a crawl. Search took seconds in ver 7.0, you can die of old age before a search completes in 8.0. "Tech support" is totally incompetent when they even bother to reply. Also, letters to the CEO go into a black hole.

I've used PP versions 4-8. Very useful product though it hasn't changed much since v6. All of my personal files & all my business's files are in PP. For security, use NTFS permissions. If you're still using Win 9x, you're outta luck. Lots of bugs, every version fixes 1 or 2 but introduces new ones. Astonishing since the feature set hasn't changed materially in years. I find different problems with PP on each machine I've used it on. It's very fussy. But so useful I can't bring myself to give up on it<sigh>.

Can't believe it. Seems as if evertime they upgrade the software, they make it more difficult to use. Scan defaults are not longer saved. You need to select your options EVERYTIME you scan. Can't fully scan legal documents. The option to 'not prompt on save' doesn't work. The scan window replaces the folders window now causing you to keep toggling between the two. I do more mouse clicks than ever to do the same thing I used to. This guys are crazy and they certainly aren't talking to their users. Guess they don't won't to with the support fees they charge to deal with the product problems. For the first time in years, I'm looking for new scanning software.

Without a doubt the scansoft technical support team has been unavailable "Web page cannot be displayed" for five days. There is no 800 number to request an exchange CD. If you have Papertport work right out of the box its a great product. I have installed new Strobe Pro + Paperport 8 onto identical freshly install Windows 98SE(all patches) machines and had one work fine and another be a nightmare. No rhyme nor reason. Tried USB, Serial, Parallel - called Visioneer and waited on hold for an hour for someone to come on and tell me to try uninstalling and reinstalling with version 6.3. That's just wondeful since all the documents were converted to Paperport 8 format. Don't buy this and try it with Visioneer scanners.

Does exactly what I hoped: Make scans searchableby - May 5, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
I had hoped that I could use this to scan newspaper clippings, articles, recipes, etc... and have them be searchable. It does exactly that. Scan your document, then do "add to index" and it ocr's it and makes the document searchable. The nice thing (that beats straight ocr) is that you have the original scan *and* the ocr. So if the ocr isn't perfect, the scan is. I scan at 150dpi and it's perfect -- ocr works great and the scans look great on-screen. Bonus: It's also perfect for organizing digital photos. Pulls from your camera, allows you to file them and you can drag-and-drop to email, printer, photoshop, whatever.

Bring back the old Visioneer!by - April 7, 2002
Pros:
Cons:
Review:
My upgrade to Windows XP rendered my three Visioneer scanners and Paperport Deluxe 6.0 useless. After investing several hundred dollars in a new scanner and P/Port 8.0 I have a system that works almost as well as the "obsolete" system. The P/Port links appear to be more stable but the new design is harder to navigate. The new scanner is more tempermental and subject to lock-up. I attempted to ask Scansoft tech support for advice but they charge $9.95 for an email and $14.95 for a call. Consequently, I am dropping my plans to replace my "obsolete" home scanner with another Visioneer/Paperport combo.

I contacted tech support and received a response within 24 hours (remarkable!). They indicated they are aware of this problem, but offered no solution at this time. I did like the features and ease of use. I was satisfied with the responsiveness of their tech support. But burning up a CPU doesn't help.

I am running Win2K and attempting to print using an HP 800 series deskjet (problem was the same with an Epson I used earlier). Regardless, I am not scanning, rather trying to print scanned images off a cd. When viewing the image in PaperPort Screwer, the print command does nothing. The Print Setup command opens no window, no response at all. Amazing. Of course ScanSoft's support server has been offline for the past 48 hours. Bottom line: hit print nothing happens. Hit Print Setup, nothing happens. Hit Tech support, nothing happens. About time we as market consumers dictated that there be a higher standard in the marketplace where terrible products utilizing bizarre uncompatible file formats are driven from our desktops for more reasonable software. Even the terrible Microsoft Imaging software that comes with the OS (under Start-Programs-Accessories folder) has a scanning feature that saves files as bmp's that can be viewed and converted using another program if needed. No reason on earth to use PPV.

I've been using PaperPort for 5 years, and this new version gives me enormously long names for scanned documents (Scan022, November 10, 2001). The new version ignores any changes I make to the default item name in the 'PaperPort Options' tab. No previous version has done this. My email correspondence with tech support has been laughable. I keep asking them how to change the default item name, and they keep telling me how to rename each individual scanned page. Other than that, it's an excellent product.
