"This burner simply doesn't work as advertised"
Pros: I can't think of any
Cons: Max DVD burn rate is 4X
Summary: This burner simply doesn't burn DVDs as fast as it should. I had some TDK 4x +R disks that it could supposedly burn at 8X. Will it did, as long as you don't mind errors. I also tried to burn 8x -R Verbatim disks at 8X and also got errors. It can't even burn some 48X CD-R media at 48x (TDK brand), although it does burn Mitsui Gold disks at 48x. Then there's the firmware upgrade issue. I believe it was version 1.05 that was nonfunctional.
That's it for me-I've bought my last Plextor product, after buying 4 previously.

i trully disagree with ur opinion!! i got my plextor px-712a and it went well.... inormally use 8x dvd+r media and didnt get any error on it.. maybe the way you installed it in ur hardrive.. make sure its the master drive among the other cd players u got.. i buy dvd+r 8 times on newegg.com with their promo.. 25 dollars for 100 verbatim dvd+r 8X and i already used them all and honestly theres no error in it.. i also tried tdk dvdr 8X ... but only verbatim, and ridata runs it 12X .. but verbatim runs the best !!!
