"Beware of defective Sony DVD burners!"
Pros: This review is for the Sony DRX510UL, which is the external version of the DRU510A. Let's face it, as of right now (September 2003) the DRX510UL is the best external DVD burner on the market. Not only is it the fastest, but it also writes to four differen

Pros: Easy to install, good software bundle, multiformat.
Cons: Died after less then 3 months of use. Customer service at first hesitant to provide a RMA # but after several calls agreed to issue one. My first Sony product that died after a few months of moderate use.

"good drive but missing the bit-setting feature"
Pros: good performance
Cons: mising the compatibility bit setting capability thus copied DVD+R may not work in a lot of older DVD-ROM. Sony should publish the method so developer can update the software (e.g. Nero, BitSetting Utilities etc.) . Bad Sony Technical Support

"8 Mb buffer makes a world of difference!"
Pros: Fast, quiet and reliable! When compared with the other multi-format competitors (Pioneer, TDK, Verbatim, etc...), this Sony has 8 MB of buffer while the others have only 2 Mb. All things being equal, the large 8 MB buffer increases performance and speed
Cons: 1) Price. Sony's products tend to be expensive. 2) Recordnow and MyDVD are okay ... don't have high expectations about "free bundled" software. If it comes with Nero, it is just perfect to me.
