LaCie d2 DVD+/-RW FireWire and USB 2.0 with LightScribe (16X/8X/2.4X)

Pros: Nice aluminum case with rackmount option, great via firewire (until it stopped working), minimal setup, liked the dual 6 pin firewire connectors for connecting additional devices.

Cons: Absolutely zero useful customer support. Does not burn at 1X as advertised with any media, made a lot of coasters, and they don't even make their own parts my guess.

Summary: Once your warranty is up, expect no help from Lacie. I actually bought this burner because it appeared to be a company that had been around for awhile, had rackmount, and supposedly burned at 1x.

During warranty, I called Lacie several times, used recommended media, and Lacie had no answer for why their drive would not burn at 1x. Maybe it's ridiculous, but if the product can't do it, then they shouldn't say it can burn. The lowest I could get was 4x. More or less, the need for 1x is for burning audio masters which is recommended to reduce errors. I have done some reading that is saying that burners are improving and that 2x is acceptable. The Lacie did not live up to expectation here and Lacie did nothing to solve the problem other than blaming it on media, even the media they recommend such as TDK, Verbatim, etc. I used high quality discs that mastering houses used and still got no better result with this drive.

I also got a lot of coasters out of this drive over the year.

When it died, it was immediate. The burner could not be recognized on either PC or MAC. It was as though it was not connected at all. After getting nowhere with Lacie support, I dismantled the case to find that the drive was a Samsung internal drive and just a simple usb/firewire card, etc. I installed the Samsung drive into a PC and the drive was toast. It couldn't be recognized in the machine. I installed into another case and also did not work. I installed a different dvd drive into the Lacie case and found that the case still worked, but only via USB. The firewire ports were also toast. Please note that all my other connected firewire devices were fine as well as my firewire ports on the machines I used it with. So, again I call Lacie support and ask for a way to purchase a new firewire/usb card so that I can salvage the case and still have firewire capability. They give me some BS saying they don't sell replacement parts. I told them they also don't sell me any more products in the future as a result. I think the reason is they don't actually make any of the parts they sell as Lacie brand.

I'm basically left with a USB case at this point when I primarily always use firewire. I would have given a much better average rating had they been better helpers when the unit quit working.

So my recommendation is don't buy anything Lacie if you want actual support when it breaks or doesn't live up to their published product claims.
