"I call it the 50/50 machine... this is your chance of getting it to burn successfully." on
Pros: The whirring of a burning CD is a nice backdrop to lull you into sleep as you wait for this machine to eventually return an error.
Cons: None. It barely does its only function.

"I have the external version. It died after 13 months and about 15-20 burned DVDs!" on by ddubay
Pros: looks nice
Cons: very limited longevity
Summary: Tech support strung me on for a couple of months, then when it outright died, simply said it was out of warranty and I was out of luck.

"YES, THIS PRODUCT IS NOT RELIABLE AT ALL. TOTALLY ABYSMAL" on by ekisom
Pros: it works like an ordinary cd rom drive
Cons: highly unreliable, after only a years usage its almost useless now. only for reading cds and high quality dvds
Summary: this product is unreliable, it is "defective" from the very beginning it gave me problems and after only almost a years time of usage it is now usefull only as a cd dvd reader. it wont burn properly, it never successfully burned my high quality photoshop pictures that reached 100mb and up. it could only burn around 20 music formats without giving you any problems. IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE!!! i feel like i'v been fooled by this product and company! it was not what i expected of a comapany such as SONY. i am very very disappointed. IT IS VERY APPROPRIATE TO RATE THIS PRODUCT AS ABYSMAL
Updated
after reading some of the reviews of cnet with high ratings and low ratings for this product. i have noticed that most of the high raters have patched or upgraded the software bundles specifically the firmware of this product, although i have already done this in the past, the most recent updates seem to have made the necessary fixes to the product. as such i have also recently upgraded my firmware to 2.1g at
http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru530adwn.htm
after the upgrade, my sony DRU530A have significantly increased its writing speed and have produced a reliable copy of sample movies. i believe that this product now has a potential to have a rating of 6 or above. -
"A very good drive for backing up Data" on by Bygeorge
Pros: Burns data & movies very well on almost any media - no prob!
Cons: Try burning movies beyond 4X - BIG PROBLEM!!!
Summary: A very good burner. i have had no maintenance problems. I was cursing Sony at first until I remembered problems I had with early CD writer models. Write at a lower speed. until I realised my errror I had been making many frisbees. Now no problem. Dat DVDs can be written at any speed but anything else and... Well you get the picture!

"Decent burner for backing up data." on by BigDaddy33
Pros: Dual format
Cons: Iffy DVD movie backup
Summary: I had this burner for about 3 months before i started getting coasters quite often when trying to backup my DVD movies. works great for backing up data. Or backing up your games that are dvd format. even when burning regular cdr's . But i wouldnt recommend getting this drive if u plan on making DVD movie backups. Its a real iffy thing. sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt.
