Sony's service and support policies are typical for the industry and are very similar to the HP DVD-Writer's. The company runs a toll-free support line Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. CT. The company's Web site includes online manuals, software updates, and online registration for the one-year warranty, but Sony's labyrinthine support section is more difficult to navigate than HP's.
Sony computer products often price out on the high side. It's nice to see that the DRU110A/C1, as an early offering of a relatively new technology, is debuting at a reasonable cost. Unfortunately (for Sony), the drive is so evenly matched by its Hewlett-Packard adversary that, in the end, it's nearly a toss-up. The finer details of price, software, performance, and features, however, should put the HP slightly ahead in all but die-hard Sony fans' eyes.

The Sony was slightly slower than the HP DVD-Writer and slightly faster than the QPS Que DVD Burner on most tests. One exception was the 500MB directory-read test, in which the Sony took more than 12 minutes and was much slower than both the QPS and the HP.
