"Potential -- but has problems"
Summary: I have four of the Toshiba SD-R5002, and one Pioneer A-03 burners. For the most part, the Toshiba burners work; but the number of failed burns or failed verifies are alarmingly high. I've had exactly one bad burn on my Pioneer, and never any bad verifies (for which it indicates the burn is good). On the Toshiba's I've seen failure rates on burn above 30% (of the four, one seems to exhibit problems more than the others and one seems to be more reliable than the others -- they are all in identical PCs). I have tried both the original firmware 1030 as well as newer firmware 1031 (though Toshiba doesn't seem to actually want to say what has been changed in the newer firmware) -- but there is little if any difference (if anything, I would say the newer firmware is worse). At the price of the Toshiba burner compared to others it would be a great value if it worked; but even purchasing DVD-R media at very low rates I'm quickly making up the difference between the cost of a Pioneer A-04 and the Toshiba.
