"The Best So Far!"
Pros: Excellent audio and video quality with plenty of features, outputs and user options. SACD capability is a bonus on this system.
Cons: An additional learning curve to understand many of the video options, but that is expected on such a system with this amount of features and controls. At least, this unit HAS these features!
Summary: I bought this unit just after purchasing the TOSHIBA sb-5980 upconverting HDMI player. While the TOSHIBA has a multi-card reader for displaying jpgs and/or playing mp3 files, the Denon can play these from CD-R/RWs and opens up the world of Super Audio CDs for me to explore. Both players make use of the HDMI for high resolution (up to 1080i), but the TOSHIBA is still an "up-converting player" with limited picture controls compared to the Denon. I had compatability issues with a previous setup (a Panasonic LCD HDTV display with the SAMSUNG up-converting player) and I returned the whole setup and waited for improvements and perhaps lower prices across the board. At that time, I had my eye on a SHARP Aquos 30 or 32" display, but the $3,100 price point was a bit too high for me. I am now using the Denon 2910 (HDMI to DVI) to the HP 30" HD Ready LC3040N LCD display (which has an excellent 15watt built-in speaker system), and I find that the cable HD signal (Scientic Atlanta Explorer 4200HD) actually runs better on the component cables compared to the DVI-out. I would gladly give-up the card reader capabilities of the TOSHIBA player in exchange for the SACD features of the Denon, any day! Others have complained about not having a surround receiver to match this device, but now there is, (though a bit pricey at the $3,500 price point), ... the Denon AVR-4806 was suggested to me, but I'm going to wait on that for awhile and explore my options. The overall video quality surpasses the TOSHIBA and other DVD players in my system, and since there are only a few HD channels on my cable service at present, I'm quite happy to have selected this player for my collection of over 375 DVD titles. I was also concerned about my selection of the HP display at first, but now this player confirms that I have put together a great system at the right price which also includes an HP d1000y Media Center PC!
