"Only outputs 1080P with LG 71 inch Plasma" on by houndpr

Pros: Plays both Blu Ray and HD DVD in 1080i on all TVs

Cons: Only Outputs 1080P with ALG 71 inch Plasma, Expensive

Summary: If you own a plasma TV and want 1080P from this machine, you better have the LG 71 inch. Unit only outputs 1080P at 24 or 30 hz. The Panasonic TH-65PX600U which I own
only accepts 1080P at 60hz. There are no other plasmas TVs that accept 1080P 24 or 30hz, except LG's 71 inch. The menu on the unit has 1080P grayed out when it is hooked
up to my 65 inch Panasonic. I thought there
was something wrong and called both Panasonic and LG technical support. Technical support could not figure it out.
So LG told me to send it back for repair.
LG repair called me and said that it will
only work with the LG 1080P 71 inch plasma.
There are no other plasma TVs currently on
the market that it will work with.
Very misleading on LG's part. Box has 1080P
    in big letters.

"The only single box that can play HD-DVD + Blu-Ray" on by Photoshop Russell

    Pros: Great picture, reasonable speed.

Cons: No interactive features on HD-DVD; on some discs, they're completely inaccessible. Doesn't work with many HDMI switching receivers; must plug HDMI directly to TV and route sound separately

Summary: The 1080P output is only at 24fps. Most 1080P displays only accept 1080P at 60fps. So your 1080 content goes out of the BH-100 at 1080i instead. Doesn't matter. Since there's only 24 fps of original content, the conversion to 1080i/60 (in the player) and then to 1080p/60 (in the display) is completely lossless unless you have a really crappy display. The result is gorgeous. If you're obsessed with the super-high bitrate audio like TruHD, you may find the various restrictions on those formats onerous -- I don't care. The two cons listed above are the big beefs for me. There are rumors of a firmware update to fix the HDMI negotiation issue -- then I'd be able to use my fancy HDMI switching receiver. The lack of interactive HD-DVD support is just the price of being an early adopter. Overall, I'm lovin it.

"Misrepresented by Best Buy as fully capable for both Blu Ray and HD DVD with no menu limitations" on by trekkest

Pros: Plays both but not ready for prime time-limited menus and firmware upgrades that take it back to worse than before

Cons: This should have been held back until it was ready for Blu Ray

Summary: We are early adopters and are used to paying more for the newest technology. However, that means the technology has to work as promised. In order to continue to play Blu Rays, I had to go to LG site and update firmware. The update turned this thing into a real dummy--the menus were not that great to begin with...now, none of the controls work any longer and if you put in a Blu Ray DVD, you better be prepared to watch it non stop because it will not go back to "play" after you press pause. In fact, the play button no longer works--you have to input "enter" and hope it plays all the way through. LG takes call back messages and never returns calls. Best Buy says it is past the warranty period. We paid 1200.00 for a player that was supposed to have the basic menu features. Don't get burned. It is really obvious that LG got in too much of a hurry and did not have all the features good to go before releasing this high priced and overrated piece of....technology.
Like I said, early adopters make the choice to pay more to get it right now. However, in this case, the "right now" is the "isn't yet"
I'll replace it with two players but I won't forget how I was taken. Best Buy may have won this battle, but I'll win the war in the long run. Think twice before you take a chance with this unsupported and flawed waste of time.

    Updated
Best Buy came through for us! The store manager was able to take it back and give us an exchange for a Samsung DUO HD PLAYER-BDUP5000. Wow, this is a nice unit. It is faster and all the menus work like a champ. It says "java script enabled" on the back of the player and that must be the trick. We are very happy with it and want to make sure we update the review. However, LG should stick to making phones. This is the second DVD player we have tried with them and both of them were disappointing.

"Expensive but worth it" on by cchaney84

Pros: great hd and blu ray quality

    Cons: expensive, no hdi menus(minor)

Summary: As a current owner of the toshiba hd-a2. I was thinking about buying a seperate blu ray player. The lg combo player works fantastically. I have the player hooked up to a pioneer pdp-5071 plasma with a mseries hdmi cable. i was very pleased with my toshiba (both the hd quality and the upconversion), however I wanted to take full advantage of the dolby plus or dolby true hd 5.1 sound quality that is available on hddvds. i also wanted a blu ray player. despite the high cost, the lg answered both my prayers. I did a side by side comparison using The Hulk HDDVD. I kept switching back and forth between my toshiba and the lg and never noticed any difference. their performance was a close as i could tell, identical. I then compared Superman Returns on HDDVD on the toshiba and S.R. on Blu ray on the lg. Again identical comparison. Brightness, black levels, color, everything looked fantastic. Now for the true test, upconversion. The upconversion was pleasing on the toshiba and this was going to be the deal breaker with the lg. I gotta tell you the upconversion was almost identical to the quality of the toshiba. i am very happy with this purchase. the only down sides i could tell so far, were only the expensive cost and the inability to access the HDDVD hdi menu. The lg has its own format of the disc menu for hddvds and that's good enough for me, however i am not a big special features/commentary guy. I care more about picture and sound and this player does both extremely well.

"Love this unit!" on by gajaw999

Pros: HD/Blu Ray Combo; sleek design, great picture

    Cons: Slow to load

Summary: I know that some of the interactive features of HD-DVD's cannot be handled by this unit, but I never use those features anyway. I love the dual functionality, I love the great picture, and since I simply run this through my stereo receiver, the sound is no problem. I love the sleek design and ease of use. Just a great unit!
