Pros HD upconversion, very small, full DivX/XVID/MPEG4 support
Cons No upconversion via component out (HDMI only)
Summary I just purchased an HDTV (Westinghouse LTV32-W6), and needed a new DVD player to feed its HDMI/Component inputs (my old one was an RCA player from the dawn of DVD with composite and S-Video outs only.) Picked this up at Best Buy for $69 after rebate.
Overall, I have nothing to complain about. It works great, plays everything we've thrown at it, and the video quality is fantastic with the DVD HD upconversion (be sure to set it for 720P -- out of the box it's set for 480i!) DVDs have never looked so good. In addition, you can burn a DVD full of AVI/MP4 files in any MPEG4 format (DivX, XVID, MP42, etc.) and it will present a folder navigation system to let you view them. They look very good (not as good as a real DVD, obviously, but far better than they ever did being played out S-Video by a laptop.) It even supports subtitles and such on MPEG4 files.
I've seen two common complaints about the player in previous reviews: some people claim it does not support DTS; I haven't tried this, but LG at least says it does, and there's a DTS configuration screen in the menus, so as far as I can tell it does support it. The other issue is that the HD upconversion of DVDs will only work through the HDMI output on commercial discs (it will upconvert through component on MPEG4 and burned DVDs, though.) This is only an issue if your HDTV has only one HDMI port and you're already using it for something (e.g. DirecTV or somesuch.)
All in all, I'm perfectly satisfied with the player; does everything I want it to do, low price for the features it has, looks great.
"Poor quality"on by tenguy
Pros Great picture when it works
Cons Doesn't work for very long
Summary Played perhaps 20 disks before it started stopping & starting every few seconds. Finally end up unpowering then repowering to get it to work OK. Took it back for repair (I have had it 3 mos. so only parts are covered) & the people in line ahead of me had the same unit with basically the same problem. No more LG products for me.
Pros easy to use
Cons Controls on the top. slow to start-up
Summary Great buy. has all the right thing for under $100. The control on the top are in a bad place. This piece will alway need to be on top. start up is Slow it wants to say "Hello"...I don't care if you are nice just open so i can add a disc. I have only played DVD's and Cd's so far, but it has been flawless. The remote is nice because it allows you to change AV input setting on the TV and adj volumn. I still plan on getting a universal.
Pros slim, hdmi
Cons Freezes often and you have to unplug AT THE SURGE PROTECTOR- resolution setting re-defaults to 480 repeatedly, bad up-convert, digital handshaking issues that you can only solve by unplugging form wall, slow response to commands.
Pros plays dts and Dolby Digital
Cons nothing really
Summary Will not play DTS through the HDMI cable But it will play through coax or Fiber Optic
