"Dazzling Video and Sound Quality"
Pros: Off the charts quality at a very decent price
Cons: I no longer care about Blu-Ray or HDDVD
Summary: Half asleep, I hooked-up my new DV SP504 to my Pioneer 50" plasma this Saturday morning and threw in the surfing movie "Blue Crush" for a test run... the picture blew me away, literally had me jumping up and down on my couch like a famous movie star on Oprah. The aqua-blue underwater scenes, the waves crashing on the sundrenched pipeline, the green Hawaiian foliage, the bikinis -- felt like I was right there holding a Corona with all the multi-colored glory of it. No doubt a big chunk of the credit goes to the folks at Pioneer for their TV, but the Onkyo DVD player really does the job. I had avoided higher priced machines figuring I would wait until the format wars between Blu-Ray and HDDVD were over before making a serious investment on a DVD player, but I couldn't care less at this point -- this machine (and this format) is definitely all I need.
Oh yes, and the CD sound was a huge improvement over my five-year old inexpensive SONY player (on DALI Speakers with an old-school Nakamichi receiver)... I'm no stereo/videophile, but it looks and sounds to me like Onkyo totally nailed this one.Updated
The great results I had with this machine were using the direct HDMI connection to my Pioneer 50" plasma.
I have purchased a second DV SP504 machine for the Samsung 32" LCD in my bedroom and it works equally well -- also used the direct HDMI connection with the TV for this set-up. Couldn't be better.Updated
Had not tried the SACD capability until yesterday, when I played my new Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto album of bossa nova classics like the Girl from Impanema (sorry rockers).
The SACD audio format is beyond belief -- light years better than conventional CD's. I haven't seen much choice available in this format, which is an absolute shame, but anyone interested in music should really make the effort to check out SACD.
There was one temporary glitch in an otherwise rapturous experience -- the first time I played the disc, it abruptly stopped after a few seconds of each song... this annoying problem totally disappeared with the second playing.
