"Not for the impatient." on by brycenesbitt
Pros: DVI/HDMI digital ouput, perfect PAL/NTSC conversion.
Cons: Slow eject, slow load, and just plain slow.
Summary: In prinicple this player is ok. It's just so slow loading and ejecting discs. The digitial output is a great feature, but almost everything else about the player falls below even the typical $59-at-the-supermarket model. The remote is miserable, the front panel too spare, the display unreadable at angle, and the non-DVD support is really basic.
But mostly you'll think the eject button is broken, because it works so slowly

"I've been converted Oppo Coming Out Party" on by freakonwaves
Pros: Video Quality, Set ups Galore.
Cons: Manual is too generic; flimsy disc tray
Summary: I've owned a Denon 1910 DVI upconversion for a while now. I thought after Denon I would not have any other DVD brand. Then comes HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. All expert opinions point to wait and see who comes out on top of this format war. Hence the reason to stick with a newer Upconversion DVD player. After "EXTENSIVE" research, only one DVD player kept sticking out for a sore thumb. "OPPO" her "OPPO" there. When experts are measuring this "$199.00" player to the likes of a "$659.00" Denon 2930ci. Well, the decision was made and I now owned an OPPO971H.
OUT OF THE BOX-
Right off the bat, here comes a player wrapped in a black cloth "nice touch OPPO!" and then to add the player comes with a DVI cable and a DVI-HDMI cable.
CONNECTED-
Well here is where I knew that my "$199.00" were WELL spent. After a few tweaks I felt ready to load some DVDs that would test out the player to my plasma.
VIDEO- "The Incredibles" "The Matrix" "Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest"
The Incredibles looked "Incredibly" better!!! right away I saw a HUGE improvement on the colors reds, shadows, blues were like I've never seen before!! WOW!
I own a Yamaha RX-V model so Sound was already optimized.
I can now patiently wait until one of the new formats becomes the NORM...
Well, In a NUTSHELL....
This player is worth every penny and I am sure that the 981 model follows this great little company which now should DEMAND some R E S P E C T! -

"Great unit" on by mattmann58
Pros: Picture quality, sound, set up, looks
Cons: DVD tray a little flimsy
Summary: Of all the DVD players I have owned, my Oppo 971H is by far the best. I love it's simplistic (read- not Tacky) looks and it'set up features. All my DVDs are a pleasure to view again. I can't get over the improvement in both picture and sound quality. You can look high and low, but you will be hard pressed to find a better unit at ANY price.

"If only every day had a bargain like the Oppo!" on by idaten
Pros: great upconversion. wonderful customer support.
Cons: wait, wait! the drawer will eventually open!
Summary: Using this with a Sony KDS-60a2000, I suspect it's a prereq to have a good display.
The Oppo has wonderful upconversion to 1080i, and I'd expect the same for 720p. Most of all, I went in expecting to spend 1-2K on a DVD player, which I really didn't want to do with Blu-ray and HD-DVD coming out. I ended up spending 200, and getting far more than I expected.
