"Best DVD Player I Have Owned" on by FuryStryfe
Pros: Plays multiple file formats, upconverts to 720p and 1080i. Plays MP3s while still showing slideshows of picture files at the same time. USB slot and Memory Card Slot make for extra bonus.
Cons: Flimsy tray makes for delicate operation when inserting and removing CDs/DVDs
Summary: If you are looking for an upconvert DVD player to play many file formats with easy with an impressive user interface then this is the player for you. HDMI cables are included as well. I upgraded to the 15ft cable for an extra 30 dollars and still received the free 6ft HDMI cable that it comes with. I would recommend this player to anyone that is looking to upconvert their dvds to get great visual quality. Movies I have seen millions of times look brand new to me and I have noticed things in the background for the first time.

"Stunning Picture Quality" on by everettlove10
Pros: Easy 720P/1080i Upscaling, Fast Loading, HDMI Output
Cons: Busy remote
Summary: At $150, this player is a steal for upscaling current DVD's to 720P. The player is easy to use and loads fast. There are some advanced features that too me are a waste of time. Once the 720P feature is set, it is just load and play.
The picture quality is sensational on my 60" Sony KDS60A2000. From cartoons like Finding Nemo or high contrasting, fast moving movies like Pirates of the Carribean, the image is HD like. The player also does a great job automatically scaling the movie.
In short, this is the best value out there for viewing DVD's in near HD quality! -
"Terrific picture, great tech support" on by robtcmarshall
Pros: Price/performance ratio unmatched
Cons: very occasional interlacing problem
Summary: I was blown away by what you get for the money with this unit. Terrific picture, useable manual, lots of flexibility and features. It also comes with all the cables you need, something rarely seen, let alone at this price.
Oppo reponded to early buyers' complaints quickly with a better remote and firmware upgrades. They seem committed to making a quality product.
The only (minor) problem I have is VERY occasionally a green line flashes on the screen when upscaling. I think it's an interlace issue. It's so occasional my wife doesn't even notice it. I differ with CNET on one point--I don't think the unit smacks of cheesiness at all. Sleek, solid.
A terrific buy; highly recommended. -
"Amazing picture!" on by da_alman
Pros: Picture quality and price
Cons: Flimsy tray
Summary: This DVD player is just amazing and the cost of the player makes it hard not to justify trying it out.
I have an LCD TV and had a progressive scan DVD player. The picture wasn't too bad, but I wanted something more.
I was looking at HD/Blu-ray players, but they are just way to expensive and as people mentioned, is not a very good investment due to the media wars, so I bought this player to see if the up conversion and reviews were correct.
Everyone of these positive reviews are on the money. This is a great player with stunning, almost HD like quality. For $150, you can't go wrong buying this as a stop gap, until the dust settles between the two formats.
Yes, the tray is flimsy, but for the price, you cant beat the quality. -
"Well worth the money" on by jgilliam1955
Pros: Sound and Video
Cons: have not noticed anything
Summary: This is one very well built dvd player. The remote is very well designed and the buttons are laid out very well. I replaced a sony with this unit. The video is very good. Not HD but pleasant to watch. The wife said the picture was sharper. So it passed the wife factor. The most shock I got was the sound. I have a outlaw & I always liked the sound. But when I played Das Boot,I heard every sound. Every DVD with 5.1 was like hearing it for the first time. The wife said the windows upstairs were vibrating. The DVD player is a very well made. The tray is not flimsy. It is made so it would take alot of abuse. I use the digital sound hook up & the HDMI for video. It is hooked up to a Toshiba Rear Project 56" HD which is 2 years old. I will get another player for a 37" LCD TV for the bedroom, which I'm sure will have a better picture. So read the other reviews & go get yourself a Oppo!
Updated
I bought another one for the vizio 37 LCD in the bedroom. I thought the 57" Toshiba had a good picture, this OPPO was made for LCD's!
The picture is stunning! I played a Rocky DVD & it was like watching HBO HD but cleaner. I compared the picture with my Sony DVD player & the OPPO is a lot better. Now I see what the LCD & OPPO can do I'm working on the wife to replace the Toshiba. It may take a year but it's going to happen
