Summary: My HD-DVD disc did not load in the player. I went on http://www.oppodigital.com and read the words: "The DV-981HD does not play Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD discs."
I read a lot of reviews on several websites. CNET's review cinched the deal for me. The DVD player is excellent. But it does not play Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD discs. -

Pros: 1080P potential is there ... apparently; Region Free playback.
Cons: Pathetic performance.
Summary: I purchased the OPPO DV-981HD because of the great reviews from CNET and other sources. I had high hopes for the unit with 1080P output but when I received the OPPO DV-981HD the picture was grainy and the colors bled like a wounded animal. When I returned it the reply was that it was not as bad as the last unit that was returned. Huh? So this is an ongoing problem? I had to pay the shipping cost and the return cost and was not willing to take another chance with another unit. Apparently, if the OPPO DV-981HD performs, it performs great. If it sucks (like the unit I was sent) then be prepared for a shipping nightmare. The OPPO offers a whack of features, but video quality was my concern and this unit failed. Proceed with caution!

Cons: Wrong ratio
Summary: Unless my arithmetic is faulty, a 1.333 zoom factor is required to get a 4:3 image to fill a 16:9 screen. How could a 1.5 zoom reported in your test be insufficient?
In any case, how could they leave off the one zoom factor that is needed 99% of the time.
