Cons: no auto upconvert
Summary: Sound quality is strong and rich, easy remote and great picture once you get upconverting to cooperate. Maybe I am doing something wrong (and if i am please say so), but there is no picture on my Pioneer 5070HD unless i stop the disc and toggle the HDMI button on the remote to whatever works....
for example i had the Oppo set to 1080i and it worked for one dvd movie "blow" then i replace it with a U2 concert DVD and i got audio only till i stopped the disc and hit the HDMI button to select 480 or 720...no picture and manual resolution searching....????
the pioneer 5070hd i have is the top 2006 model but its native resolution is 1365 x 768 but according to cnet it can accept a 1080p signal...can it display one? Be sure to check how far you can upconvert based on how much your tv can accept -

Cons: Build Quality
Summary: Wow! what an amazing purchase. The difference between this player and my old DVD - holy cow! I had to find bad things to ay about this player. Really, often you would think that you arte watching HD images. I realy do not notice th build quality because the player is tucked away and I use the remote to slide the tray in nd out and to otherwise control the player. I would recommend this player to anyone and thats for sure!

Pros: Fantastic Upconversion, Great option set
Cons: 1080p makes some standard DVD's look worse, Chose to set the unit at 720p.
Summary: Lives up to advertised promises, and to the Oppo hype. Outperforms any upscaling DVD player I have used to date (which includes Pioneer, Denon, Toshiba, RCA and Sony). For the price, this is a great option. Until the next generation DVD player battle has passed take this advice:
Save a wallet, buy an Oppo. -

Pros: Great video and features
Cons: buttons on player don't respond well
Summary: I have the predecessor to the 981. The 971, which for the money is damn hard to beat. If you have a high definition TV or not this is the player..The audio side isn't great for high end audio, but for basic home theater setups its great..I also have the Denon 955S $799, which is great as well but much more costly
