"Truly sends a 1080P signal" on by allargon

Pros: Decent picture quality from upconverted DVD's;okay sound; sleek slim profile

Cons: Bold-faced lie about playing DVD+R's

Summary: I love how it upconverts standard pre-recorded DVD's. Most 480P DVD displays don't look so good on my TV. However, my dual and (older) single layer DVD's look great upconverted to 1080P on my 57" 1080P Mitsubishi. I used the HDMI output. It truly did output to 1080P according to my TV.

It's no substitute for 1080P HD-DVD, Blu-Ray or even 720P/1080i broadcasts. However, it does a wonderful job of upconverting older 480P discs.

CAVEAT: The box says the player plays DVD+R's. Panasonic's web site says the player plays DVD+R's. However, on page 4 of the manual (inside the box after you buy the thing), you see that it doesn't play all types of DVD+R's even finalized ones. Grrr! Anyone that has recorded shows usually has DVD-R's or DVD+R's (more likely with older recorders) that they would like to play.

It's not even deceptive advertising. It's just a bold-faced lie.

This is all on Panasonic. They need to fix that. It ruins an otherwise solid player.

"Good so far" on by dunebarris

Pros: It plays many different formats; Sleek, simple look

    Cons: none so far

Summary: I bought this 1 month ago without any research because I was in a hurry. My intent was to do research after, then return it if necessary. I'm keeping it.

I read the previous reviews but do not have the same problems. Mine did play +R, +R DL, and+RW. Maybe its not compatible with DVDs burned using certain types of software??? I recommend taking your burned DVD's to the store and testing on the display unit. My DVD's were burned both on MAC and PC platform using a few different ripping and burning softwares.

"Like the other User Opinion says.... Virtually No DVD+R support" on by jfriedenthal

Pros: Good Sound quality, simple setup, nice design, HDMI

Cons: Virtually no DVD+R, DVD+R DL support, picture quality is so-so

Summary: Picture quality is just fair..... The Samsung 1080p7 has produced much better picture quality. The support for media i.e. DVD+R, DVD-R, etc. is deceiving.... It doesn't support much at all.

"pretty good unit..." on by karl175

Pros: lots of options, extremely quiet

    Cons: none so far...

Summary: I bought this unit mainly for upconversion and the DVD-RAM compatibility. I was a little concerned about the the other reviews which were having trouble with the DVD+R. So far I have watched several movies, DVD+R, and RAM and have no problems with this feature. I am using a new LCD HDTV with HDMI conection and I really canot see the difference in picture quality between this one and my old cheapo dvd player with cable connection. I have had good experience with panasonic products in the past and expect this unit is as good or better than any other in this price range.

"Only so-so HD quality picture" on by longhorn57

    Pros: solid performer

    Cons: picture not spectactular

Summary: Using an HDMI cable to connect to my 42" LG 720p HDTV. The picture quality is only so-so. The faces especially don't look great. I notice that bright light on a face really makes the picture look unnatural, almost pixalated, too much of a contrast between bright and dark doesn't look right on the faces. I continue to work with the settings both on the Panasonic DVD player and my LG TV. Maybe I wil find the right combination. Perhaps I am unfair in comparing to my Sony 55" Grand Wega LCD HDTV. I have this same Panasonic DVD player (purchased two of them) hooked up to my Sony and do not experience the same viewing problems. Maybe the issue is more with the LG TV?
