Cons Remote is cheaply made and not layed out in a nice way, and as of May 24th 2005 no longer updateable
Summary I have been using this player for almost a year now, with no problems. Bought it for the price, the ability to play almost any videos I burned from my PC, and most important the ability to update it. About a month after buying I downloaded and updated the firmware to a newer version that was avalible off philips.com. Wasn't much on the site describing what the update fixed or improved, but did notice it played more disc that it use to not play. Today when looking to see if any newer versions were availble, the download site was gone, called philips 800 number only to find out that at this time philips no longer supports updates, was told they had problems with them and that it could make the player unusable. They wouldn't even tell me how to check the current version I have on the player, use to know how to do that but had forgotten. Its a great DVD player and I love it alot but to be frank it TOTALLY sucks when they sell it as updatable and before a year has pasted, stop offering them altogether. For this reason alone I have to rate them a 6 instead of an 8 like I planned.
Pros Playes just about everything from anywhere
Cons Menu and video could be better
Summary I’ve had this unit for a few years now. I wanted it so I could play movies from over seas and also movies set in Dvix, SVCD, VCD, etc. I have yet to have a problem; I did a firm ware on in a while back (when I 1st got it) as well as a hack to set the region to 0. The picture is not as clear as my Toshiba but it’s good for the price. I got it for 59.99 at CompUSA about 3 years ago.
Pros Its a pretty box.
Cons Lack of support - no firmware updates.
Summary Phillips does not support this product.
They do not/will not provide a firmware update for upgrading divx codec.
When I emailed to make my complaint about this their service representative (mis)-informed me that their product does not support avi files. Clearly their service reps do not have the remotest clue that an avi file is only the wrapper which contains information relating to type of audio and video codec...
I will never buy another phillips product again.
Pros Small and cheap
Cons Doesn't work + terrible customer service
Summary My Philips DVP642 player's power supply failed after about 4 months of average use. That's not good. But, Philips customer service has done everything possible to make it prohibitively time-consuming and frustrating to exercise the warranty. I have spent at least 4 hours on the phone and sent 6 faxes over 5 weeks, and had to take the unit to a local repair shop to get the disk stuck inside removed. I'm about to ship the broken DVD player back to Philips at my own expense, and then it'll still take at least 2 more weeks to get a replacement, which I can only hope will work.
The repair shop told me that my experience is not unusual. Philips has a very high defect rate, and customer service so bad that repair shops prefer not to fix the units.
Bad quality and AWFUL customer service mean that I will NEVER buy anything from Philips again.
