Summary: My Philips DVP642 player's power supply failed after about 4 months of average use. That's not good. But, Philips customer service has done everything possible to make it prohibitively time-consuming and frustrating to exercise the warranty. I have spent at least 4 hours on the phone and sent 6 faxes over 5 weeks, and had to take the unit to a local repair shop to get the disk stuck inside removed. I'm about to ship the broken DVD player back to Philips at my own expense, and then it'll still take at least 2 more weeks to get a replacement, which I can only hope will work.
The repair shop told me that my experience is not unusual. Philips has a very high defect rate, and customer service so bad that repair shops prefer not to fix the units.
Bad quality and AWFUL customer service mean that I will NEVER buy anything from Philips again.
