Stay away from this player, go with oppo

Pros: Nice features

Cons: HDMI Software not compatible with many tvs.

Review: I purchased this dvd player to use with my new DLP television. The player takes a while to power up which is no problem. It has a lot of nice features, but the picture is horrible. The HDMI pic is very grainy and there is absolutely no difference between 480 and 1080. The upconversion was the main reason for purchase and it doesn't work. Many other people have had the same problem as evident in AVS forums. It seems to be a problem with compatibility between the DV46 software and the upconverters/scalers in many brands of televisions. I contacted pioneer and they told firmware upgrade might help, they weren't sure. I took it to an authorized dealer for upgrade. The upgrade ruined the microprocessor inside and pioneer said it would take 6 months to get a new one(backorder due to high volume of DV46 players not working). I called pioneer to get a refund since I have only had the player for a month and half and they said no. So much for customer service.

I bought a toshiba dvd player for less $100 to use while the DV46 is in the shop, and it has a much better upconversion pic at a third of the price.

Good DVD Player

Pros: Great job of upconverting video...

Cons: Video problems...

Review: I bought a Pioneer Elite DV-46AV (upconverting to 1080i) DVD player ($299), since I have a lot of Standard Definition DVDs.

I played a few and let me tell you, most of them looked amazing! They were clear, crisp, and had a good color saturation. The only exception would be any older DVDs, where they did a poor/quick job transferring the video
(Batman 1, 2, 3, and 4; these were re-released, which remedied the grainy video and improved the sound). Any CG movie
(Final Fantasy, Finding Nemo, Cars, Dinosaur, Robots, Ice Age, etc.) looks fantastic (even sharper than regular movies)!

I'm into lots of animation. If you have newer DVD releases of Disney favorites, you'll love the detail, beauty, and
colors. As for Anime, newer Anime (late 90's and beyond) will look great!

Unfortunately, I did have some problems with this player. I connected it via HDMI to a Samsung 61" DLP (HL-S6187W). Sometimes, when I would play a DVD, it would split the
picture in half (top half of the TV and the bottom half of the TV). Other times, it would display a thin green line on the
left side of the TV. This was resolved by simply powering off and back on. But after a few times, especially for a Pioneer Elite product, I figured it was time to return it.

I could have gotten another Pioneer, but
I decided to go with a Denon DVD-1930CI (upconverting to 1080P). The Denon was only $30 more. I have to say, I definitely liked the Setup menus & the remote of the Pioneer Elite! But we'll see how the Denon performs over the next few weeks...

Great upconverting dvd. Completes my system

Pros: Super picture; even better sound

Cons: None at this time

Review: Only had this player a few days but I have been very impressed. There is no reason this couldn't be a 10/10. I wanted a good/great upconvering dvd player to compliment my new TV (Sharp Aquos 42 1080p). Dvd's played on my old Panasonic DVD-S35 were disappointing, to say the least. The DV 46AV hooked up quickly, and other than adjusting the TV setting (16:9), it was ready to go. I decided to try out "The Eagles Farewell I Tour" dvd. The picture was impressive, on par with the high definition picture from my DVR, but what was most impressive was the sound. My wife and heard distinctive instruments from the various speakers whereas before they were often muddled together. Wow! I was almost going to buy the Samsung DVD HD960 but the salesman convinced me to spend the extra money on the Pioneer and I am glad that I did. It has none of the image problems that the owners/reviewers of the Samsung have experienced even though the Samsung is in the top 10 list of DVD player by CNET. Time to add the Pioneer to the list!
