CNET Editors' Take

The RCA HDV5000 is nearly a clone of Toshiba's entry-level HD-DVD player, the HD-A1.

Review: Quick Take: The RCA HDV5000 appears to be a clone of the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player. The specs and features are essentially identical, with only a minor change to the player's cosmetics: the front panel of the RCA HDV5000 reverses the black and silver color scheme of the Toshiba, and it utilizes rectangular rather than circular buttons. We expect the RCA HDV5000, which debuts in late May 2006, to perform exactly like the Toshiba HD-A1. Both retail for $500.

"HD is here, and RCA delivers." By voodoogmr

Pros Pristine picture quality, outstanding audio, easy setup

Cons Slower boot-up time and bigger and heavier compared to standard DVD players

Summary I've been sitting on the fence with these new HD formats. After owning an HDTV for 3 years, I was anxious to be able to play HD movies whenever I wanted. And now, that time has finally come.

The RCA HDV5000 is basically the same as the Toshiba HD-A1.
