"Worse piece of A/V equipment I've ever purchased"
Pros: Easy menu and functions
Cons: Video resolution is nauseating
Summary: I am no expert on A/V equipment, but after spending the past 15 years building computer equipment and putting together countless home theater components, I feel I know a few things. No matter what resolution you choose on this player (Progressive or Interlaced) the outcome is the same...horrible. I'm not one of those that plugs in equipment and expects it to work to perfection without tweaking. But the truth is, that if 2 hours of tweaking did not produce satisfactory results, then I figured no more time would be necessary to reach the inevitable conclusion. Returning this tomorrow and looking for an alternative. In closing, my 10 year old Zenith and 8 year old Toshiba DVD player which I keep in the guest room show better resolution...enough said.

Sniperlou1,
What kind of connection are you using? What quality of cables? What kind of source dvd? What television are you using? I am using mine with a premium HDMI (gold connection) cable. The DVD-HD860 is hooked up to my Samsung LN-S4096D LCD HDTV. With the upconversion, the picture looks so good I tend to forget I'm not watching an HD source. For anyone with an HDTV, it is glaringly obvious when you are not watching an HD source, so to forget about it is saying something. Also, there really aren't all that many options to play with on this DVD player. I wonder if the problem is your HDTV and not the DVD player? -
Well, I own this machine which is in the bedrrom with my Samsung 23" LNS2352W and it works great. Would have bought the same machine for my new Samsung 40" LNS4051D but it wasn't availabe so I got the Samsung HD870. Maybe it makes a difference re: screen size. My smaller tv's which are 1080i look amazing. Maybe larger TV's require more money to be spent. In any case, your review bites due to lack of information. If you give a rating then you need to back it up with information so people can get an idea of how you came to that conclusion, dork.

Saying something is junk without providing any information whatsoever regarding configuration settings, cables used, equipment used, or even what criteria the author used in determining quality vs junk makes a worthless comment to submit on a review website.
When others are giving product ratings up to 9/10 it would probably be a good idea to offer just a few substiantive details so people don't immediately jump to a potentially incorrect conclusion that the dvd player, or tv, or both were setup wrong. It could lead someone to wonder what kind of "computers" and "home theater components" a person was building over the past 15 years to give such a rant without any background. I wonder if there was a typo and the correct comment meant to say the author spent last 15 years building the same computer and home theater component?? Who knows. Hopefully next time more useful feedback will be provided... -
Same issue here. Its going back to Circuit City tommorow. My older JVC player with S-Video looks better than this. I have a Samsung 50" Plasma I was testing this with. I tried every resolution setting on the thing and still was unsatisfactory getting the HDMI uplink to produce a nice picture. I also had issue with the menus locking up and I had to power off the unit and power back on. Not the quality I would expect from Samsung.

What type of connections did this reviewer use? If you use the RCA yes it will look like crap compare to HDMI or component cables?
