"Big Improvement over RDR GX315"
Pros: Unlike the RDR-GX315, this unit actually records in DVD+R DL.
Cons: Not many cons on this baby.
Summary: My first dvd recorder was the wonderful Sony RDR-GX300. When I say that Sony had upgraded the unit for the next model to the RDR GX315 which supposedly included the ability to record dual layer discs (for copying Tivo'd programming) I went out and bought it. Using it, the discs recorded were not compatible on any other DVD player or recorder, and worse of all, the recorder would not record programming on macrovision protected Direct TV programming (i.e HBO, Cinemax, Starz). This in addition to an obnoxious titling interface, which didn't allow enough characters to be input to effectively label programming.
Then came along this little darling which harkens back to all the prositives of the RDR-GX300 and in addition has additional 2.5hr recording speed which is perfect for those recording programs which run over 2hrs, and gives better picture quality than the 3hr speed. The only complaint (only minor) is the remote. The supplied remote (RMT-229A) requires users to go to menus to change recording speeds.
Overall 2 thumbs up for this DVD recorder, and kudos to Sony for fixing a mistake in the RDR GX-315.
