"Great machine for the buck" on by a/vnut
Pros: great HD picture, excellent upconversion
Cons: Slow start up, no 1080p
Summary: First off I will mention player is connected to a sony 60" sxrd xbr2 rear projector. I have a large collection of dvds black and white and color, with such a large screen i needed to get either an upconversion dvd player or just make the jump to HD dvd. Boy am I glad I picked This deck. Hd dvds look fantastic, even though the deck is 1080i not P. my black and white dvds look fantastic! The original "thing" looked like it was filmed yesterday! What detail! Deck has a well built feeling, remote is well laid out. only gripe is slow start up. But with this decks performance I can live with it. This is my first toshiba product so we will see if it lasts as long and as well as my other equipment has (sony, denon, pioneer) If you do not have the cash to go 1080p this deck will more than satisfy you.

"HD-A2 is a turkey" on by 747jock
Pros: video playback
Cons: sound problems; glacially slow startup
Summary: Waste of my money! Using the HD-A2 with both music CDs and standard DVDs, I kept getting volume attenuation every 10-15 seconds. Thought it was my new Onkyo TS-SR605 receiver, but once I substituted a different DVD player, the problem went away. There's something wrong in the audio section of this unit. Also, why does it take over 30 seconds of the "Welcome" message before the unit will respond to commands, like Play and Close/Open? My Sony DVD player works far faster. Thinking of buying the Toshiba? I recommend saving your money for a better-quality player without these headaches.
