Pros 1080i output, simple to use
Cons a bit slow, little "Persistent Storage"
Summary For what it is the HD-A2 is great, I've had it for a few months now and haven't had much trouble since I finally got the first firmware update which allowed easier online access, it took two tries to get the disc, the first one was shattered by the USPS but they sent me a new one within a few days. I have watched a few regular and HD movies and they all look incredible on my Toshiba 1080p tv. I was pscyched to get Transformers with online content to try it out, it works but with a hitch. You can download the extra stuff with no problem, depending on your network but then you have to decide what to keep because the player has only 128MB of "Persistent Storage". You can't even get all the online content for one movie! The player has USB "Extension Ports" on the front that may be for extra memory but I can't find anything to support that. It would be great to use the USB ports for downloads, then you could just keep the flash drive with the movie in the case. Come on Toshiba!
Pros Excellent Picture Quality
Cons Doesn't Have The Greatest HD Audio
Summary I picked one of these up when it was released and have never had any problems with the player. It has great picture quality and updates are released in a very timely manner. It did require a firmware update out of the box though. Also, for some mind boggling reason it came with composite cables instead of any of the cables required for high definition playback.
"A good purchase"on by KypSan
Pros Firmware updates, great video & options
Cons Firmware update failed about 20 times
Summary Owned this item for roughly 2 months and have enjoyed using it. Bought the HD-A2c model from Costco which included an HDMI cable.
Setup was easy with the exception of the Firmware update. My broadband connections were setup properly however the HD-A2 cept failing during download. Almost always 3/4's of the way through. Eventually, after several tries (and an hour or two) it completed.
Everything else has been as I expected. Good quality and functionality. Picture is great and the menu's are cool though a bit sluggish sometimes.
Pros Good video up conversion and sound quality
Cons Load times that go along with all HD players.
Summary I was able to get this player at walmart during that 100$ sale. This player, if you can still find it, should only cost around 100-120$ which is a great quality buy. Even if HD-DVD loses the war the upconversion on this player makes it worth the buy. Check the reviews on you HDTV and see if your TV is good at de-lacing 1080I. If so you dont really even need to have a 1080P player. This one will do just fine.
The only draw back that I have had is the load times, which come with all HD players, and the cheap component cables that this player comes with. To fix that you can go to monoprice.com and buy a 4$(+ shipping) HDMI cable that will arrive at your door in 3-4 days.
Pros Sleek look, great price, quality picture
Cons Loading is a litle slow
Summary Bought this player at Walmart for $98. You really can't beat that. I bought Transformers as the first movie to play and I was not let down. The picture quality is great. I have a 1080i TV so I am not upset that it does not play 1080p. Great buy.
