"Great entry-level HDM player" on by psanidas

Pros: Stand alone player with great picture quality

Cons: A bit more expensive than A-2 model

Summary: Overall, I am glad that I decided to take the leap into HDM with the A-3. While it doesnt have 1080p output, neither does my Sammy HL-R5676 (well, it doesn, but only thru non-HDCP VGA input), so no biggie.

Also, while I love my A-3, I probably would look at a A-2 right now, with prices in the mid $100's

"Better off with a VHS Player" on by strat77x

    Pros: Absolutely Nothing.

Cons: Worst Product I've Ever Owned.

Summary: Bought this player new and several new HD-DVDs. Took everything out of shrink wrap and put in Bourne Identity that came with the player in the box. About mid-way through the movie it starts slowing down and the sound stops working. It then gives its most common refrain: Error Code 408bc405. It won't resume playback at all, you're just frozen at an error screen, mid-movie. It does this with > half of the HD-DVDs I've watched on it so far always at a random point mid-way through films.

When you don't outright get the error message, movies become unwatchable because of the video playback hiccuping, the sound cutting out for 5-10 minutes of the movie and the disc just skipping ahead to a random scene.

It's incredibly slow, the load times are horrific. Try hitting eject...well that'll take the player a few minutes to process your request...hope you aren't in a hurry to switch out the disc it can't play.

I've researched this issue around the 'net, this is not a broken player...this piece of junk is the model they are selling, the problems I mention above are happening for everyone. This is the worst product I've ever owned- it's going in the dumpster.

"Doesn't play home made DVD-R, DVD+R. long loading time" on by gpp94002

    Pros: free hd-dvd movies

Cons: many....loading time, doesn't play dvd-r, dvd+r movies, too much delay

Summary: Toshiba made me return my Philips 5982 DVD player only because it is a HD DVD player. I was very disappointed with its performance espcially the loading time and the time it takes to recognizes the DVD-R, DVD+R movies and most frusting thing is it freezes when the DVD is not regonized. My home made movies in DVD-R format and very few DVD+R formats are recognized. I need to pull out the power cord and replug again to make it work. Quite awful set for $199 I paid. I dont think I got a lemon. In any case, I am going to return it to Bestbuy.
