"Not as good as I hoped...." on by punkerpat

    Pros: finally a 1080p24 output!

    Cons: looks ok....

Summary: Doesnt look as good as my PS3 on my SXRD XBR2 RP...dont know if it's just the videos I've purchased but a noticable difference between my HD DVD's and Blu-ray. A little tearing from time to time...and It locked up on me twice. Still looks better then SD though!!!

Audio sounds great on my Denon. Dolby TrueHD support is great!!!

"Like running Vista on 128 megs of ram with out the updates." on by CLRMAV

    Pros: Never found any

    Cons: Software is horific

Summary: I am still amazed that Toshiba has there name on this. Bought it and three new HD DVDs. 2 of the 3 would not play. Had Best Buy try and upload a patch. No luck. Plus the response time and success from when you insert the disk to pressing play is terrible. You have to beg it just to eject a disk. When it pops up error codes, all you can do is call a Toshiba help desk that has worse hours then my Bank. Took the first one back for an exchange. Just boxed up the second one to go get my money back. Guess I will stick to my PS3 and Blue Ray. It's works flawless!

    "Extremely pleased" on by aric32

    Pros: Impressive picture quality

    Cons: Slow initial start-up

Summary: After reading the opinion of C-net and some of the others on here I had to wonder if I indeed had the A30, but sure enough I did. I've had none of the problems or faults listed except for when first turning on the machine it took about a minute before I can open the door and insert a DVD, before upgrade, see below. I'm running mine in 1080p and have a glorious picture. My old DVD's also look 10x better on this unit than before. Maybe it has something to do with the TV being used. Mine is a Samsung LNT-4071(which I will review later, for it will take too long for me to sing it's praises). I did the firmware upgrade via ethernet cable and it worked just fine. I haven't noticed a difference in the picture although the start-up time has gone from a minute to around 30 seconds. All in all a very good player and highly recommended. I've never seen movies look and sound this good. Bravo

"good looking straightfoward operation good audio" on by jalanrolls

Pros: start-up and disc loading seem faster than prior reviews

Cons: if it has color, contrast, brightness adjustments I haven't found them

Summary: First experience with hd-dvd so with price breaks bought in on the experience. very good sound and channel separation. video would benifit from adjustments in the player to achieve viewer preferences but toshiba's color choices seem satisfactory. if anyone knows if the adjustments are hidden somewhere I would love to know. good product, good value but if the format survives would move this unit to the bedroom system and spend more for a high- end player for a high end system
