"Superior black tones"
Summary: I upgraded to this DVD from the progressive scan Pioneer DV-434 and another $2-300 DVD progressive scan player with DVD-Audio support from JVC. The Toshiba provided the best picture on my digital Sony 36" XBR television with component viedo imputs. The most striking difference between this one and the JVC was the level of detail in the shadows. On the Shrek DVD, I was able to see the texture of the lower half of Shrek's face (in the shadows) in the final scenes at Farquaad's wedding. The JVC and Pioneer sets simply painted a washed out dark area. The remote for the Toshiba is much larger than the rest, and uses a joystick instead of cursor keys. The on-screen menus for the Pioneer where much less intrusive than the Toshiba, but the superior picture quality makes it all worth it. The manual is poor quality, and confusing for even a technophile. The Pioneer DV-434 had the worst picture of the bunch, and actually appeared blurry compared to the other players. If you have a very good digital TV with component video inputs, then this is the one you'd want to start with in a progressive scan player.
