"Bought as audio player, sounds good through dedicated headphone amp."
Pros: Sound quality
Cons: No resume play on SACD, skips in first second of DVD-A playback
Summary: I haven't hooked it up to a TV, so I have no opinion of it's video capabilities. I purchased this unit as a dedicated audio player for my MF Xcan V3 headphone Amp(mod), and listen only through Senn. HD650 headphones. The sound is solid. It's apparent that Yamaha went through a lot of trouble to make a good universal player. Compared to my other players that don't support DVD-A (but will play DTS or Dolby Dig) the sound is very clear. The DTS decoder is superior to anything I've heard and restores my faith in DTS format, which I had written off as muddy with no detail in the top end. CD's sound terrific, also. This is the type of unit that you don't use the optical or coaxial outs, because the Burr-Brown DACs do such a great job generating analog. Not to mention that licensing requires Yamaha to down convert digital outs from 96(DVD-A) to 48KHZ (CD quality). So use those RCA analog outs to get your money's worth out of a pretty worthy unit. If you've got $1000-1500 to spend on a DVD player, go ahead. But you could spend $329 on this unit and probably never hear the difference.
