"I like this DVD recorder but was suprised at a few missing features that I thought would be standard"
Pros: Easy to navigate through on-screeen menus, nice video quality on XP and SP recordings
Cons: No "last position" memory and no repeating event timer recording option
Summary: Aside from being surprised that there are a few of what I would expect as standard features missing on this machine, the DMR-E55 seems to be of good mechanical quality and does a decent job of recording.
What's missing?
Well, even the cheapest VCR on the market can be programmed to automatically record events that repeat on a daily or weekly basis. The DMR-E55 does not have this option which means that to program repeating events, you must set up a new timer recording for every episode, be that every day or every week. This can be quite a nuseance at times.
The other surprising ommission is that there is no way to save the point at which you stop viewing a particular disc recording or pre-recorded DVD movie. This means that once the DMR-E55 has been shut off and turned back on again, you will have to "fast forward" through the disc or chapter to get to the point at which you left off. "Last Position Memory" is a feature I would have expected as being standard on this type of machine.
That being said, I still believe the DMR-E55 is a pretty good buy for the money.
