"Mostly Positive"
Pros: Works most of the time
Cons: Weird error codes
Summary: I bought my unit in December 2002, and it has had to go back to the factory twice. I agree with other posters--customer service with Philips leaves much to be desired, and the firmware discs do more harm than good. The unit is squeamish about DVD+R discs--finalize them right away and store them in cases--one speck of dust or one scratch can wreck hours of work. DVD+RW's I have very little trouble with. Pre-recorded DVD?s generally work fine. Usually ?rebooting? the unit by unplugging it for 30 seconds clears most problems up. The most annoying glitches are the undecipherable error codes that pop-up on the display that look like some kind of hexadecimal code?DB7FC58422 is the one I frequently encounter, which translates roughly as, ?I refuse to record anything more to this DVD+R disc. Nor will you be able to finalize it. You can still view what you have already recorded, but only on this machine. If you were planning on using this disc on another device, you?re SOL.? On the plus side, there are enough inputs in the unit to plug-in virtually any other type of electronic device?my Ti-Vo and my VCR are both hooked-in. I praise the unit while knocking on wood.
