    "Abysmal! Buy something else!"

by JayR on February 24, 2005

Pros: Nice menu options, recording options

Cons: Incompatible with everything, noisy fan that never turns off, product manual that is complete garbage

Summary: Although this was a Christmas gift, I've seen enough to know I will never buy an RCA product in my life. Even if someone gives me another one, I'll accept it and give it to charity.

The manual is terrible. The troubleshooting guide is useless. Most of the problems you will encounter will not even be mentioned in the troubleshooting section. The guideplus system that comes with the DVD recorder would be nice if it worked, but it was not able to work with Comcast digital. If it's not compatible, the manual pretty much says you're SOL. The manual suggests that you splice the cable signal through the recorder, but the picture was not as clear. The recorder also only recognizes audio cds which are in MP3 format only, which is stupid. I have cds recorded on other sources that I could play on cd players that were several years old (they were able to recognize other formats) but this high-tech 'marvel' couldn't play them? Sometimes it played them, then 5 minutes later it says it doesn't recognize the audio disc. I was able to successfully record old videotapes to DVD, but was not able to duplicate family-made DVDs from another DVD player. It recorded the sound but not the video, which isn't hard to believe if it plays CDs one minute and rejects it the next. This was a Christmas gift, but this puppy is going to be sold on Ebay for a bargain price. I've had it for a month and fooled with the connections, rewiring and rewiring and rewiring, all to no avail. And forget about calling for support. You'll die of malnutrition before you get help. Save yourself the trouble and disregard whatever bargain price you see and don't buy this thing (unless its my E-bay listing).

it's 1am on a sunday, and i'm online searching for answers on this model!!! Does that tell you anything? Many of the same experiences, although not quite as bad as yours. Curious...did you experience problems with r+ discs? we did fine with +rw, but with +r, a lot of issues recording and then the dvd player wouldn't play back the dvd...although our other two dvd players would...does this have something to do with 4X or 8X dvd discs? shandateague@hotmail.com

your review was very funny - and believe me, laughing sure beat the hell out of beating my head against the wall with this thing.
