"Only buy it for a relative you hate"
on by DocuConsumerPros Easily causes insanity
Cons Repeated freezing, immature technology, bad warrantee policy.
Summary Did not burn one CD successfully, but ruined 10 blank discs and I lost media I thought had been successfully burned, before I gave up. This unit is so bad, 4 out of the 5 designated RCA service centers in my area refused to service it, or said "exchange only", though exchange and refund are not covered by the warrantee.
The one place that did agree to "fix" the machine sent it to an RCA tech. When I picked it up post-repair and tested it at home, the machine froze, requiring a hard reset, within the first 2 minutes of powering up. Again never successfully burned a DVD, though would indicate the materials were in the "library" and something had recorded onto the disc. The repair shop concurred it was a lemon.
RCA finally agreed to replace the unit, and did so with their new DRC8060N model. The new model was just as bad as the 8040, right out of the box. (See my review under that unit).
Though it is less than 1 year from my initial purchase, RCA/Thompson refuses refund and requires another round with the designated repair place. Even the repair tech said to stay away from RCA DVD burners (as well as the Toshibas), and pay extra to go with Panasonic or Sony instead if you want a technology which is actually ready for market.
The RCAs should not even be on the shelves, and the behavior of the RCA customer service people at the management/supervisor level indicates they know it-- the point seems to be to wear out or wait out the consumer until the warrantee runs out. -
"terrible product"
on by bkelliPros might record something if you're lucky
Cons dont count on it
Summary My unit performed much as the one described by another reviewer, DocuConsumer. {see review titled "only buy it for a relative you hate". More than 50 percent of the discs I tried to use were rejected outright by the machine. Others were accepted, appeared to record, only to be rejected later. However, I did succeed in making one successful recording out of about ten attempts. After reading about the other reveiwer's expericnce with the RCA warrenty dept, I think I'll just give up now and save the hassle.

"Great recorder, great price"
on by rknopfPros Excellent video quality, easy recording, nice editing features, full motion thumbnails - all at a very reasonable price.
Cons Slows down remote response on my DirecTV box! Chapter hiding is not very precise.
Summary I thought I was going to have to lay down about 5 franklins just to be able to record all those saved programs on my Directv DVR before its hard disk went south, but this unit surprised me for its low price, high quality, and ease of use. I particularly like the ability to set the length of recording time so I can start recording a saved TiVo program and leave the room. All for $200. Also, a word about the place I bought it: www.weaknees.com - spectacular service, instant shipping via FedEx included, and good support that I can get to in less than 5 minutes!

"I don't like it"
on by dadyrtbPros does record OK for a while
Cons Stop work and now dead
Summary At first I was OK with the recorder when transfer my old VCR tape to DVD but later it is a big mess. It won't record anything but 8x or less DVD+, Mess up the disc most of the time before do it right one. In the middle of viewing or recording, it stopped and said Hello (of course, your recording disc is gone, let replace it....try and throw away several disc because of it). Now it just dead. I unplug the recorder and plug it back and only see the recording light up and can not do anything with it. I have it for more than a year, therefore no luck on looking for service from RCA. May be that my luck that I do not have to deal with customer no service as the other mentioned above.

"Overall great deal"
onPros Easy to use, great picture, full motion previews. Scheduling shows to be recorded I have had upto 15 shows programed, I don't know how many it can schedule, but it sure beats 6 or 8 like the typical VCR. I tried a LiteOn 5105 and found it to be clumsy
Cons Setting chapter marks around commercials is not too precise, sometimes missing a few frames of the show or keeping a few frames of a commerical, no matter how carefully you set the marks. I don't do this often, only every once and a while on a tv movie I
