"Three machines, all defective" on by abcharlie

Pros: easy to use, good pictures when it works

    Cons: Three machines defective

Summary: I bought this to timeshift TV shows. The first one would record on DVD-RW but not on DVD-r ( It would eitehr refuse entirely or would record for 20 sec and then quit.) on two different brands of DVD-R.
The second machine worked fine, gave good pictures, but when I recorded House on about half way through the disk, the speach was shifted by about 1/4 sec with respect to the pictures-- Ie the mouth stopped moving befor the sentences stopped sounding.

Returning that one as well, the third one about 5 min into a show began stuttering, showing huge ( 1.4 screen hight) pixels and jumping. Recording other stuff later on the disk, again got the audio-video non-synchronization.

Three chances is it. Back it goes.

"So much better than the dvdr120 version" on by kdc300z

Pros: Sleek, V or VR mode, auto chapter,fr mode

Cons: No fan for heat dissapation, no component input

Summary: A VERY NICE DVD RECORDER SO FAR. LAST YEARS VERSION, THE 120 MODEL WAS AN ABSOLUTE PIECE OF GARBAGE. IT HAD SOME FIRMWARE ISSUES THAT WERE NOT FIXABLE AND WERE NOT GOING TO BE TAKEN CARE OF BY SAMSUNG. THIS YEAR THEY SEEMED TO HAVE FIXED THE ISSUE. THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE TIME AND DATE OF THE 120. WELL ANYWAY, WHATEVER THE PROBLEM IT SEEMS TO BE GONE. RECORDING IS VERY SIMPLE, JUST LIKE A VCR EXCEPT ON DVD. DVD-R IS THE MOST COMMON AND PLAYABLE FORMAT SO THATS FINE... THE AUTO CHAPTER FUNCTION IS GREAT, EVERY 5 MINUTES MAKING A CHAPTER IN HIGH QUALITY MODE AND EVERY 15 MINUTES IN LONG PLAY. BUILT IN TUNER IS GOOD QUALITY. SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS THAT IS EXTREMELY MEDIOCRE IN CHEAPO BRANDS AND CAN LOOK WASHED OUT. GOOD QUALITY RECORDINGS, MPEG NOISE REDUCTION, FR MODE, GOOD BUILT IN TUNER, NEW DESIGN, AND SEEMS LIKE BETTER QUALITY.. WORTH IT FOR NOW!

"Freeze when recording" on by gblancov

    Pros: Easy to use.

    Cons: Freeze when recording

Summary: I bought this dvd recorder to transfer all my Hi-8 cassetes to dvd.
I am using the firewire port to record to dvd.
For some reason at the end of the recording, the recorder completely freeze, no response in any button, and I have to unplug it from power, but the dvd I was recording go to trash because can't be finalized.
It looks like all depends on the cassete I am using. But for some reason I don't understand, a bad recorded cassete can freeze a dvd recorder, so, I can't use the recorder using the time function, because I need to stop it manually at the end of the recording to prevent the freeze.

"Locks up frequently!" on by dldaven

    Pros: Inexpensive

    Cons: Locks up, media incompatability

Summary: I have had this recorder since June 2006. It has been back for warranty repairs (tuner went bad) and has locked up during recording a half-dozen times. Do not count on this machine to record a must-see show or event; you will end up with nothing if it locks up. Forgive me, once I did get a recording following a lockup but with no sound and could not get the sound to work again with the tuner until I unplugged it and then plugged it back in; that is what you have to do to get this machine out of it's funk. When you add to the lockup problem the fact that it only records -R/-RW and then Samsung's poor tech support, I really wish I had researched this machine better. I would recommend to anyone to stay away from the Samsung R-130..

    Updated
The lockups have become so frequent now that Samsung has finally agreed to do another warranty repair. They claim that if it continues to lock up after this repair that they will replace it. What I really want is to get my money back...

"I'd keep looking around for another one" on by bricksterr

Pros: Easy setup, good picture quality

Cons: Sys. errors and failed recordings sour the experience

Summary: Originally, I thought this thing would be no different than the 4 or 5 VCRs I owned before it. But nnnoooooooo..........

Plays all DVDs it is suppose to without a hitch however successfully recording or editing with it can be hit and miss. Periodic lock ups around the 10 to 15 minute mark when recording leaves you with.... nothing. You may miss that last episode Lost. Editing or simply deleting programs from RWs can also be problematic and leave you with an unusable RW.

The lockups or system freezes are the worst. Now I have a few grey hairs on my head and I remember the day when slapping the side of a TV set or holding the Rabbit ears a certain way could produce a better picture. But owning a modern piece of A\V equipment that requires you to unplug it to reset it in this century is unheard of. Yes, the "hold off button" option seldom resets this player when it freezes and there is no reset button.

Big disappointment. RMAing as we speak. Can't wait to see what the rebuild works like.

I'd stay away from this unless you know someone personally who can tell you of a better experience with it.
