Summary: I bought this as a VCR replacement. Much to my complete amazement, every time I tried to copy a movie from DirecTv I got a message saying that the information was copyrighted.
It never even occurred to me that one could not record off the air as everyone has done with VCR's for the last 25 years. I don't see how Sony can sell such a device. I have never come across this with other DVD recorders.
Do NOT buy this if you want to record movies from cable or satellite! It simply will not do it! I returned it immediately.

If you want to record copyright material off cable or satt. You need to hook up a vidio stablizer. They are about $30. on the internet.

Is it possible that Sony could make a unit which controls the satellite box and then not record movies or other types of programming? I am strongly considering this unit... however, if I cannot record off of TV, what is the purpose?
Has anyone else had this type of problem with this unit?
