"Very Good Recorder for the price and preformance"
Pros: Faster fromating and finalizing DVD media than pervious Models ..Good Quality Play back when recordeed in HQ , HSP and SP modes
Cons: ONLY ONE S Video Imput source and that imput is only on the FRONT of the recorder
Summary: I purchased the Sony GX 355 DVD Recorder based on need for a second DVD recorder in an alternate room and for burning SAT TIVO hard drive recordings and based on the performance and ease of use with my existing SONY GX 315 DVD recorder when burning SAT TIVO programs on to DVD + medium.
I have been pleased with the SONY GX 315 for SAT tivo program burning when using SONY s &HQ , HSP and SP quality recording modes . The play back quality is very good and has been consistence in burning a successful disk ((& never failed when using DVD + media and only failed once when using DVD media &))
The interactive menus are not hard to follow . The remote is decent with lay out and hides the recording options under a sliding cover . Response is quick . As above Picture quality is very good when viewed on my 50 HD Plasma using the component video out . Unit styling is very attractive and gives a high the look with its silver body and display lighting .
The SONY GX 355 model removed the over the air analog tuner that the SONY GX 315 has & which is a mood point as I am recording from SAT Tivo HD recordings . Also considering that Digital converted will be needed for Over the air reception in 2009..this is a good choice for a DVD recorder if you are using cable or satellite for you source material . Sony does offer the GXD 455 with a digital tuner if you are planning over the air recording and will somewhat future proof your purchase for such recordings source .
The GX 355 ( which is all black ) lost the attractive body styling that the GX 315 has and has removed some of the menus options as well as the hidden recorder buttons on the remote.
The quality of the recordings in the HQ , HSP and SP quality recording modes is also very good on par with the GX 315 DVD recorder when using the Component video out of the DVD recorder
Menus on the GX 355 DVD is the same as the GX 315
OF note the GX 355 is some what quicker in formatting new DVD disks and with finalizing a DVD disk.
The GX 355 offers a HDMI video /audio out which in theory may give a better picture than using the component video out to your monitor&.this difference I could not see on my 50 HD PLASMA
Over all I am please with the GX355 performance and picture quality and find if similar to the GX 315 and a bit faster in the formatting and finalizing DVD disk. I have not experienced the problems explained in these reviews ( such as player self formatting a disk when placed in the recorder ..Or the player changing the input video source on it own ??)
((((((((I did experience one reviewer problem for a shot while and that was that the Remote did not operating/function at all . It would not control the GX 355 or the GX 315 &..I PALYED WITH ITS BATTERIES .. Tried the default remote assignment code ( of which there are 3 ) CHANGED THE recorder assignment codes so the remote did not operator both recorders ..Nothing seemed to work. I used my GX 315 remote to test and format the DVDs on the GX 355 and for recording &
I consulted the manual and found a procedure for ( resetting the GX 355 recorder ) after that procedure the remote came to life ??? And operated both my GX 355 and GX 315& I can understand it helping the GX 355 but as to why it started to operate the GX 315 I cant say ..But id does and still is working fine now ???))))))
My one big gripe with both of these Players ( GX 355 and GX 315 ) is that there is still only one ( S video source input )on these players and that input is located in the front of the recorder( Line 2 input .. inside a fold down door ) ,
(S video0 is the best video signal source you can send in for a recording on these players and having only one and located in the front of the recorder makes for a very messy and un slightly wire exposure and recorder ..as the video( S video ) and (audio L & R ) Line 2 input need to be snake around to the front of these recorders with the door cover left open . Pulling ( disconnecting this set up when not in use will eventually strain the connectors and cause recording problems ) ..Using the component( RCA ) video jack in the rear ( Line 1 input ) will result is a slightly sub par recording as opposed to using the (S video input ).. Line 2 input .. found in the front of the recorder .Updated
I did not find the reviewers problem of the recorder jumping into a recording mode ...immediately after formating a DVD ..I been using SONY DVD+R and Verbatim DVD+R for recording
Correction to ..... my one Big Gripe
Using the COMPOSITE ( RCA ) video jack in the rear ( Line 1 input ) will result is a slightly sub par recording as opposed to using the (S video input ).. Line 2 input .. found in the front of the recorder .
