"Not quite ready for Prime Time"
Pros: Great upconversion on standard DVD's
Cons: Won't record movies from Dish Network/Showtime
Summary: A couple of rough spots on the operation of our unit. First, when you put in a blank DVD it formats it them goes directly into record, a real pain! Worst, we tried to record a couple of movies that were on Showtime and the recorder said it detected copywrited material and would not record...never seen that over the air before!
It does play existing DVD's quite well on our JVD 40in LCD tv, but hardly worth it considering the record drawbacks. We are returning ours today

This Sony RDR GX355 is not what I wanted. This is my third dvd recorder(first Sony) and the first to not allow me to records shows from my DVR box. My other philips recorder does. I think it's because of the "line in" recording feature that stops the shows from being recorded from HBO. That's a deal breaker right there. My second beef is that it doesn't allow you to put in your own Chapter markers(index makers); it will put 5min or 15min or none automatically, but I want to manually do it, where i can put it where I want it; deal breaker; My third beef, it doesn't start recording right away; delayed by seconds, cutting off the beginning of intros or music videos, etc. Thus, I'm returning mine.

Recently such entertainment providers such as HBO and Showtime have somehow put copy protection on their movies. I have Dish Network and can't record on a Philips recorder.

Just a comment on not being able to record something on Showtime channel: Some programs are copy-right protected and DVD recorders will not record these programs. This is completely normal. There is nothing wrong with the machine when it does this. I have an old VCR that bypasses this copy protection just because it is so old and didn't have the technology to block it when it was built. But if you buy something nowadays, they will (or should) be blocking copy-righted programs.
I just bought the Sony RDR GX355 last week and so far have had no problems with it. I'm not getting the recording problems that you've noted - mine does not start recording automatically like yours is. You probably have a faulty unit. I'm probably going to wait a few months or even a year before I write a review on this. -
I ordered this unit this morning via store pick up and after reading the review stating that the copy guard shutdown bs is back in this unit forget it. i will cancel my order without even picking it up. if sony thinks that the way to do buisness is to make it so a dvd recorder cannot record simple tv programs for later viewing then any thing they make from here on in is of no use to me. I am a simple end user that wants to record shows and watch them some from hbo and sho-time however i was looking for a hdmi unit to do this but now i'll just stay with what i have. i think i'll just get a tivo or a dvr and forget about this sony junk. by the way i will not be spending 800 clams on a blu-ray player when hd-dvd is so much affordable and besides that there will be no porn on blu-ray only hd-dvd good luck sony with that blu-ray style betamax you have created.
