"A disappointing showingâ?¦"
Pros: Sony name, dual-deck with NTSC tuner, FireWire MinIDV input, Progressive-scan capable
Cons: Unit simply doesn't record DVD-R's, nor dub correctly from VHS.
Summary: I'm a loyal Sony fan, and usually try to stay on the Sony ES side of things. I was hoping this Sony RDR-VX530 would be one unit for atleast 5 things: NTSC tuner, VHS playback, DVD playback and dubbing VHS to DVD and dubbing MiniDV to DVD.
But it simply won't burn reliable DVD-R's (source: MiniDV). Nor will it even dub from VHS to DVD as advertised. Pausing the VCR and pressing the "<-- Video" button yields nothing. The unit doesn't even budge. Nor does going VHS to DVD via the Setup Menu route; unit never kicks into record.
I've burned 4 DVD-R's and all failed to Play on other set top DVD Players (a JVC and another mid-line Sony), though the discs would play back on my G4 running OS X 10.3.9 and Apple's DVD Player v4.0. The DVD-R disc brands that I were tested were: Memorex, Maxell, Verbatim and "Platinum" (no name).
So, it's likely that I'll return this combo unit and go for stand-alone decks for dubbing from VHS and MiniDV to DVD-R's.
C'mon Sony, we expect more reliability from you thatn thatâ?¦
