Lasted 2 years...by - January 19, 2005
Pros: Maybe 2 years is a long time for DVD players, this was our first so I have no other experience. Hook up is easy, we have an older tv so we thought the picture was very good, remote is easy to use and fairly intuiutve. Nice having the VCR and DVD in one un
Cons: DVD player started to freeze intermittently, and could be corrected by pressing "stop" and then "play" again, but it got worse and worse until it would not respond at all, then would not recognize the disc once removed and reinserted. Brand new DVDs were

Took it back!by - January 12, 2003

Previous review touted the advantages of the combo player. After using this for over a month, I took it back today. The VCR never worked properly - the tracking was too sensitive or something, but the bottom line is that we could not find a single tape that played without an annoying flicker. No amount of adjusting the tracking helped, and the on screen tracking adjustment was poorly implemented. Last straw was the DVD player churning to a halt during one scene in Minority Report. The player simply would not play the scene, entering some kind of demented slow motion, then popping pixels, then stopping. The disc was clean! Maybe someone else will have better luck with this unit but for me, not a good choice.

If you are a dedicated videophile the idea of a single combo box probably disgusts you and you are not reading this review. I already had a VCR and 27" stereo TV and I wanted to add in a DVD player. However the TV, only a few years old, had only 1 set of inputs in the back. In order to add a DVD into the equation I would ALSO have needed a switch and 2 more sets of cables. This would add over $100 to the price of the DVD player. Add to this the fact that I did not have much extra space in the entertainment center, the idea of a combo box appealed to me. Pull out the VCR, plug in the combo DVD-VCR. No muss, no fuss, no extra cables, no switch box. The unit replaced a 3-year old Toshiba VCR which worked flawlessly since the day I unpacked it, so I figured this Toshiba product would be just as good. There are plenty of video and audio outputs on the back of the box, and it only needs that 1 set of Monster cables to hook to the TV. The sound is great and pushed through my 2-speaker audio receiver gives theater quality sound. If I ever wanted to go "surround sound", the box is ready for that too. The remote, while not "universal", is very well-designed and easy to use. All in all this is an excellent selection if you want a combo DVD-VCR. Got this at Target for $229 and it appears to be headed for $199 by early next year. If a combo box is on your list, don't pass this one up. Rated this 10 for value and quality based on experience. Rated 9 for support because I did not need any, so I have no comments about support. Features rated 9 because the unit does not play DVD-A discs.

Easily one of the nicest combos.by - August 21, 2002

This is by far one of the nicest dvd/vhs players out there. The remote is very nicely set up and spaced out. The design is quite easy to understand. The manual explains everything clearly. Though somewhat pricey it is still worth it.

Neat Unit but has Problemsby - July 5, 2002

To start off, this unit looks extremely rushed. The BIOS is a direct knock-off of the 2700 and 2800 DVD players, but unfortunately no one at Toshiba bothered to ensure the features actually worked. There are many Setup Options that when selected, do absolutely nothing, and many of these are quite important like Title Stop, Repeat, etc. Wait for the next version to come out and for Toshiba to fix the glaring bugs.

Much better than the Samsungby - July 4, 2002

I purchased this one after the Samsung combo I got first couldn't seem to play a DVD without repeated glitches. No such glitches here...video and Dolby Digital audio have been perfect. The unit's setup and various on-screen menus are more confusing than they should be. As a previous reviewer wrote, the remote only operates this unit...but it is not advertised as universal to begin with, so what's the gripe? Contrary to that same reviewer's comments, for a whopping $10 at Target I readily found a universal remote that controls most of this unit's functions plus the TV and cable box.

Great.......5 star Combo Playerby - June 26, 2002

This unit is one of the best out there. Very simple to operate and records DVD to VCR with not problem. I tried the Panasonic combo but was disappointed when the word ZOOM1 stays on TV. This unit has a great zoom, simple remote and very easy to operate in little of no time.

I've bought the Samsung dvd-v2000 earlier, actually two of them. With the same problems with the glitches, I returned it for the Toshiba. This unit is the best out of all the dvd/vcr combo I'd tested. No glitches, the picture are much clearer than the Samsung due to the colorstream. Trust me on this one, you won't be disappointed. I gave the Samsung a 4, but the Toshiba SD-v280 a 5 star.
