Manufacturer description
Toshiba SD-V592 features HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) that provides the best interface between a DVD player and compatible products, such as a digital television (DTV). When matched with a compatible TV, this single interconnecting cable combines multi-channel audio, uncompressed digital video, intercommunication between devices and simple control protocols. This single cable connection ensures that all signals remain in their pure digital form and secure by use of High Definition Copy Protection (HDCP) regardless of signal output resolution. HDMI can support uncompressed digital video up to HDTV level resolution. Thus, the player makes use of this conduit by up-converting the standard DVD picture resolution to nearly HDTV-quality with output resolutions of 720p or 1080i. This makes a DVD player with an HDMI connection the perfect match for today's digital televisions. And because this conversion is performed in the player, the signal remains free from excessive digital-to-analog conversion artifacts. ColorStream Pro component video outputs allow the highest quality video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped progressive scan TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts - like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker - are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Digital Cinema Progressive provides smoother, clearer picture from discs encoded at 24 frames per second. It is especially useful for highly detailed or fast-moving images. 4 Head/19-Micron Head System offers superior slow motion effects over conventional 2 head designs. Toshiba's 19-Micron heads match precisely the width of the LP and EP azimuths and read only the signal recorded on each azimuth (not adjoining tracks). The benefit is significantly enhanced SLP and EP performance so good, it rivals the quality of tapes recorded in the SP Mode. S-VHS Quasi Playback allows tapes that were recorded in a Super VHS deck to be played back in the Toshiba deck without a significant reduction in quality. VHS HiFi Stereo delivers the highest quality stereo sound from tapes recorded with a high fidelity soundtrack. Can be used in conjunction with a surround sound receiver to create signature Dolby Surround, Dolby ProLogic, or Dolby ProLogic II Surround sound in a home theater environment. Auto Clock Set ensures that your VCR never blinks "12: 00" again. A special data stream in your local broadcast source (where available) automatically sets the clock display and keeps it accurate - even when time changes to daylight savings and back. Commercial Skip - after a program has been recorded, pressing the SKIP button once during playback will automatically advance the tape 30-seconds forward bypassing recorded commercials. Pressing the skip button on the remote again will advance the recorded tape for another 30-seconds for a total of 60-seconds (30 sec x 6 Maximum).User opinions

Beware VCR doesn't record
Pros: Good DVD player
Cons: VCR dosen't record properly
The Toshiba VCR seemed to have a record sync problem causing the playback of tapes recorded on the unit to go to snow every minute or so for the first 20 to 30 minutes of a recording the auto tracking would come on and get the picture back only of it to go away again and again. This happened on two units both doing exactly the same thing. We used new tapes each time and it consitently failed each time. It seemed to be in the recording of the tapes since tapes recorded on other VCRs played ok but tapes recorded on the Toshiba just didn't play on any VCR.

Choose another product.
Pros: Same pros as other users in terms of ease of use, good overall quality
Cons: Unfortunately, the same cons as well. I've experienced the freezing, the inability to read burned discs ( blockbuster and netflix discs included), slower load times, and stops playing in the middle of a movie with a green flash, and the poor quality dark

Sub-par Quality
Pros: Easy to hook up to the home theater system.
Cons: I have returned one deck because it couldn't read burned dvd's and locked up on commercial discs. The second one worked well for a few discs but is now locking up on other discs.

HDMI is very lacking
Pros: Nice features for the price...if they all worked.
Cons: HDMI video looks terrible on my Mitsubishi 62525 HDMI input. Same complaint as other user. Black areas and shadows have all sorts of color blotches. No setting change seems to help. The picture actually looks better using component cables. Big letdow

Great picture quality from both DVD and VCR.
Pros: This DVD/VCR player is a great value, I am very happy with it so far. It's played everything I have thrown at it. DVD's, DVD+R's, VCD's, and SVCD's. I haven't tried jpeg or mp3 disc's yet but the manual says it will play them. The DVD picture quality t
Cons: The HDMI and resolution buttons are only on the unit, not on the remote. I don't get this one but it's not a huge complaint. (which is why I gave it a 8 for ease of use) The HDMI output picture is shifted to the left a little, I'm working with Toshiba on

Good picture, upconvert, HDMI output and plays VHS tapes
Pros: I'm happy with this player so far, I bought it for the HDMI output and upconversion. You can even upconvert through component cables on some dvd's. I think it depends on if the dvd is copy protected or not. The picture looks great, colors are bright and
Cons: Whites are too bright, I adjusted this down with my TV settings but sometimes wonder if I'm making dark scenes too dark with this. I leave the settings to HDMI 720p or 1080i so I don't have to change it often but if you like to fool around with this set

HDMI Doesn't Deliver Super PQ
Pros: Picture quality w/ HDMI is slightly(if you have trained eyes)better than w/ component cables
Cons: HDMI does not handle grey areas(i.e.shadows,scene fading, twilight scenes, etc) of pictures well. All grey/shadow areas on pic become mosaic-like flickering blotches which is so distracting.
